Raindrops is a Q&A series that examines the contributors of Operation Rainfall. On this edition, we sing in the rain with Seattle based Review Manager, Josh Speer.
How long you have been at oprainfall and/or what got you started here?
I have been a part of oprainfall for well over a year now. I got started during one of their recruitment campaigns and haven’t looked back since! Very cool to have gone from a fan of their original campaign to an active part of the oprainfall team.
How long have you been a gamer?
Since I was five, so about 30 years or so. It all started with Mega Man and Mario and gradually evolved to a massive obsession with all sorts of different genres and consoles.
Favorite genre?
Probably a tie between platformers and puzzle games. I love old school platformers as well as new, and keep coming back to classics like Tetris.
Favorite game?
God that’s a hard question. I’m going to cheat a little, since it’s beyond hard to narrow this down. Probably a four way tie between Final Fantasy VI, The World Ends With You, Demon’s Crest and Smash Bros. for Wii U.
Favorite character?
Has to be either classic Mega Man or Zero. I love me some robots and the Mega Man series as a whole is very near and dear to my heart.
Last game you bought?
Kirby’s Rainbow Curse. I have yet to play it, but I highly anticipate the gorgeous graphics and unique gameplay style. I mostly blame Smash Bros. for distracting me.
Last game you played?
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. That game is the primary reason I have been utterly hooked by my Vita. I keep coming back for another heaping helping of madness. I can barely wait for the upcoming Afterbirth DLC.
If you could make one character come to life to hang out with, which character would you choose?
Mog from Final Fantasy VI. I love the design of the character, and anybody bad ass enough to beat up foes whilst dancing is my kind of guy.
If you were stranded on a desert isle with just one game song in your iPad, which would it be?
Dracula’s Castle from the Symphony of the Night OST. If I could pick a whole soundtrack, it would either be that game or The World Ends With You.
Favorite Anime?
I honestly almost never watch anime, but if I had to base this off of what I have watched, it would likely be Escaflowne or Naruto.
Favorite animated show (non-anime)?
Teen Titans! Not to be confused with the watered down Teen Titans Go! Loved the humor and action, and Ron Perlman voicing Deathstroke was a thing of beauty.
Favorite live-action TV show?
This one is gonna have to be another tie, since I watch WAY too much fantastic television these days. Based off current shows, this one would be a three way tie between Arrow, Fargo and Penny Dreadful.
Game You Don’t Like, but Everyone Else Does?
The Kingdom Hearts series. Though I was initially charmed by the series, it became more and more confusing, grindy and just plain ridiculous. I understand the appeal of both Final Fantasy and Disney, but the games just aren’t for me.
Game You Most Want Localized?
Easy one. I hunger for Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier Exceed. I loved the original. It was full of delightful fan service, colorful characters, a fun battle system and a moderate learning curve. The sequel looks to be more of the same, and I think it’s more than possible to get over the localization hurdles after seeing that Project X Zone is getting a sequel.
Game you regret not playing earlier?
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. I can’t stress enough how much I am hooked on that game.
What is the disc/cartridge that is in all of your consoles at this very moment?
No game exists in all consoles at the same time, but here’s the breakdown. In my Wii U I have Smash Bros.; in my Vita I have Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart; and in my 3DS I have Theatrhythm Curtain Call.
What is the one thing you would like to do in your life that you haven’t done yet?
I would definitely love to find the time and money to attend E3 one of these days. Though PAX is great, I’m sure E3 is a total rush.
