Yes, this was a real thing. Nintendo did in fact host a Nintendo Direct on April Fools Day. And they wasted no time with it either as the whole event started with a bang… or should I say many bangs.

Super Smash Bros. - Mewtwo Super Smash Bros. - Mewtwo and Mii Fighters 01
Super Smash Bros. - Mewtwo and Mii Fighters 02 Super Smash Bros. - Mewtwo and Mii Fighters 03

The official Mewtwo trailer for Super Smash Bros. was shown. The Pokemon will feature quite the interesting array of moves. The character will join the battle on April 28th for $3.99 if you purchase him for an individual game ($4.99 for both together). Club Nintendo members that registered both games before March 31st will get him on April 15th for free. In addition, more customizable items for your Mii Fighters will be available as DLC for Smash the same day (by that, I mean the 15th, not the 28th). These will be available for $0.75 for each costume for each game or $1.15 for both games.

But this wasn’t the only Smash news. Lucas from Mother 3 will return. The release will be in June of this year. In addition, a Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot will be open after the Direct to tell Sakurai and the team which fighters you would like to see as future DLC and Smash Bros. games.

Super Smash Bros. - Lucas

The next wave of Smash Bros. amiibo were also revealed. Here’s what you can expect in the future:

  • May 29th
    • Charizard
    • Pac-Man
    • Wario
    • Jigglypuff
    • Lucina
    • Ness
    • Robin
    • Greninja

    • Dark Pit
    • Palutena
  • September
    • Olimar
    • Zero Suit Samus
    • Ganondorf
    • Bowser, Jr.
    • Dr. Mario

They also announced that both Mewtwo and Lucas would be getting their own amiibo.

amiibo Tap 01
amiibo Tap 02 amiibo Tap 03

amiibo Tap was also revealed for the first time. This is the Virtual Console demo system that was teased a while ago. Keep in mind that the game will be randomized the first time you activate your amiibo for this. This means that you may not have the same demo as someone else even if you have the same amiibo character. This application will be free to download this Spring.

Mario Maker 01 Mario Maker 02
Mario Maker 03 Mario Maker 04

Next up after the Smash/amiibo barrage was Mario Maker and the 30th Anniversary of Super Mario Bros. An anniversary celebration was announced with Mario Maker as part of the focus. The game will launch in September. Iwata teased more to come for the anniversary.

Yoshi's Woolly World 01 Yoshi's Woolly World 02
Yoshi's Woolly World 03 Yoshi's Woolly World 04

Moving over to more regional stuff, Bill Trinen started by giving more info on Yoshi’s Woolly World. The game will feature a yarn world that you can unravel to create eggs and use them to create things like platforms. A Mellow Mode is also being created to help those that are stuck at certain parts.

Yoshi amiibo

In addition to the game, a special Yoshi amiibo line will be created. However, instead of being plastic, this will be made of yarn. Both the game and the amiibo will be available this Fall.

Splatoon Ranked Battle 01 Splatoon Ranked Battle 02
Splatoon Battle Dojo 01 Splatoon Battle Dojo 02

Splatoon is next and we see two new modes. First is Ranked Battle. It will be similar to the online Turf Battles but with special rules and rankings. The other is the Battle Dojo, which features 1v1 battles between friends with one on the Gamepad and the other on the TV screen. In addition, Splatoon amiibo have been revealed, which will give you special missions. The entire line will be available separately or together the same day as the game, May 29th.

The Wii U Virtual Console is getting more games. Nintendo 64 and Nintendo DS games are coming to the system. Both will be playable on the Gamepad screen. N64 titles will be priced between $9.99 and $11.99 — games on the Wii side of your Wii U will be $2.00 for the upgrade — while DS titles will be priced between $6.99 and $9.99. Yoshi’s Island DS and Super Mario 64 are available right now with more to come later. Here’s what you can expect.

Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem 03 Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem 04

Moving on, we get the first look at something we’ve been waiting since January 2013 to see: Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem. This is the crossover game between the two series that we’ve been hearing absolutely nothing about since it was announced long ago. Check out the trailer below.

Fatal Frame

Next u… HOLY SHIT! FATAL FRAME!… uh, I mean, Fatal Frame will be coming west. Expect something later this year.

Next up, it’s BOXBOY! by Hal Laboratory. This is a black and white puzzle game that features customization for your block character. The game will release tomorrow.

Pokemon Rumble World 01 Pokemon Rumble World 02
Pokemon Rumble World 03 Pokemon Rumble World 04

Following this is a quick look at Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition and Puzzle & Dragons Z. This two game package will be available on May 22nd. A demo for Super Mario Bros. Edition will be coming later this month on April 30th.

NOTE: It was originally reported that you could pre-order the game on the eShop starting today. This was inaccurate. Pre-ordering began today on, not the eShop.

After this, we get a look at the game Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains. In anticipation of the game, the first two episodes of Attack on Titan are available on the eShop. The game will be coming in May. Check out the trailer below.

A new update for Code Name S.T.E.A.M. will be coming. It will feature things like sped up enemy turns, allowing you to get back to your turn quicker. In addition, a public tournament called “Hijinx” begins today and goes until April 15th. More tournaments are to come later.

Everything starts April 16th. These will all be individually available for $4.99. However, purchasing Battleground Z and Ultimate Angler together will allow for a discount to $7.99.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D Featured

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D was given some love. New elements were given some special attention. This new port, exclusive to the New 3DS, will release on April 10th. Here’s the new trailer for it.

Fire Emblem 01 Fire Emblem 02
Fire Emblem 03 Fire Emblem 04

Next, we get more information on the new Fire Emblem game. One thing that will be new is your avatar being the main character, instead of holding that status with a second character as you did in Awakening with Chrom. In this game, you were born in Hoshido but raised in Nohr. Choose which side to go down and your experience will change. The game is expected next year.

Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer 01 Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer 02
Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer 03 Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer 04

Following this, we see a new Animal Crossing game called Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer. As the title suggests, this will focus on design rather than living a life. And on top of this, they have revealed new amiibo cards. Both will be coming this Fall. This will also be when the NFC reader for the original 3DS models release.

Mario Kart 8 DLC Pack 2 01 Mario Kart 8 DLC Pack 2 02
Mario Kart 8 DLC Pack 2 03 Mario Kart 8 DLC Pack 2 04

Finally, we get a look at new DLC for Mario Kart 8. This new DLC, called DLC Pack 2, will feature characters from Animal Crossing. Isabelle will join the race, as will the Villager. Dry Bowser will also be part of the Pack. The DLC pack will actually release on April 23rd instead of in May as originally stated. In addition, a new 200cc class, bringing even higher speeds, will be coming on the same day FOR FREE.

And that’s it. What did you think of the presentation? Leave your thoughts down below.
