Shovel Knight, the fantastic 2014 platformer from indie studio Yacht Club Games and one of the contenders for Game of the Year, continues to crank out exciting new content with each new release of the game. This time around, the Xbox One version of the game (which has been revealed to be releasing next month) will feature content revolving around the stars of Rare’s 1991 NES action title, Battletoads.
A short teaser trailer (which you can view below) shows the musclebound amphibians Zitz, Rash and Pimple disembarking from their spaceship to meet up with the titular knight, just in time to strike a cool pose. Aside from this, very little is known about the team’s involvement in the game. While it would be interesting if they were playable characters along the lines of the recently-announced Plague Knight DLC, the health bar that fills up in the corner as the video ends seems to indicate that they will be one of the many mini-bosses that Shovel Knight randomly comes across during his travels.
More importantly, could the sudden inclusion of characters from a franchise that hasn’t seen a release since 1994 indicate that something else may be in the works? After all, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer did recently appear at a Microsoft event in a Battletoads t-shirt. All I know is, with the other classic franchises getting other such reboots, the future is looking bright.
