GAME OF THE YEAR |

Previous Winners 2012: Xenoblade Chronicles 2013: Fire Emblem: Awakening |
It’s time. The results are in and one game has received the majority of support from the contributors. We’ll reveal the winner soon, but first, let’s remind everyone of the contenders for Game of the Year: our console award winners.
- Tales of Xillia 2 – Winner: PS3 Game
A great sequel and addition to the Tales series. Can’t wait for more to come this year.
- Shovel Knight – Winner: Downloadable Game, Multiplatform Game
THE indie hit of the year. Sets the bar very high for future retro inspired games.
- Super Smash Bros. for Wii U – Winner: Wii U Game
The winner of an incredibly strong Wii U final. An incredible addition to the mascot fighter series.
- AKIBA’S TRIP – Winner: PS4 Game
Our favorite from the young console as well as our favorite of the PlayStation ports. Thank you, XSEED.
- D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die – Winner: Xbox One/360 Game
Exclusives may be hard to find, but this is one of the best games so far in the Xbox One’s short time.
- Wasteland 2 – Winner: PC Game
While Bethesda toys with Fallout, the original survival RPG gets a sequel — and we get something special.
- Bravely Default – Winner: 3DS Game
Well worth the wait. One of the best Japanese RPGs to come out in recent years.
- Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus – Winner: Vita Game
We loved Burst when it released on 3DS in 2013, we love this game, and we’ll love any other Senran Kagura game that releases.
THE WINNER, AND OPRAINFALL’S GAME OF THE YEAR FOR 2014, IS…
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
It has been settled. The King remains supreme. Nintendo has made it three in a row for Game of the Year…
Though it seems a bit odd after we rewarded Shovel Knight a number of times the past couple of days. I feel like I just turned them into Homer Simpson when he went to his high school reunion and found out he didn’t actually graduate. I guess they have to settle for being second best this year, beating out everyone but Smash.
As for our winner, it’s an absolutely gorgeous fighter. The new modes are intriguing. The roster has plenty of favorite characters to choose from. And if you’re looking for a fun time, check out our in-game battles on our YouTube channel and see which contributor reigns supreme.
Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining us for the 3rd Annual oprainfall Awards. I’d like to thank Josh Speer, Angela Hinck, Karli Winata, Tyler Lubben, Dalton McClain, Steve Baltimore, Guy Rainey, Will Whitehurst, Justin Guillou and Eric Chetkauskas for helping write these articles. These things take about 15,000 words to complete, and I’m pretty sure I’d go insane if I had to do this single handed. Also, I would like to thank image creators Brandon Rose and WishingTikal for the special images you’ve seen the past couple of days. Finally, I would like to thank you for coming here and supporting oprainfall. Without you guys, none of this would happen.
And with that, here’s to 2014, and the hope for an even more fruitful 2015.
