Neptune Break (Hypderdimension Neptunia, Mk2, Victory)

Being the only entry on this list to appear in all three games, Neptune Break is included due to its spectacle and damage output. The attack slashes the enemy multiple times and ends with a giant explosion made of purple flames. In the original game, this attack is downright game breaking seeing as how one use of it can wipe out a majority of normal enemies. What also makes this attack great is Neptune’s hilarious one liners.

Black Label (Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2)

This attack comes from Neptunia Mk2’s DLC character Cave. Seeing as how she is named after a development team best known for bullet hell shooters, it is natural that her attacks would reflect the style of those games. What we have here is an attack that is not only incredibly flashy and over the top, but it also shows the attack from an angle that gives it the same look as Cave’s games. Also a fun fact, Black Label is the subtitle given to most of Cave’s updated versions of previous games.

Inafune Brand (Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2, Victory)

I think it is safe to say this one  speaks for itself. Nepgear basically bludgeons an enemy to death with Keiji Inafune’s body that is attached to the hilt of the sword while the phrase “you think you have money to burn?” appears in text. Nepgear’s reaction to this attack is also priceless.

Gust’s Drawing Song (Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2)

Continuing on the subject of really weird and silly attacks, there is Gust’s drawing Song from Mk2. This one occurs with Gust singing in Japanese over an 8-bit sounding chip tune song while she draws a very basic sketch of a monster. She then proceeds to launch said drawing into the air where it multiplies and rains down on the enemy while each one explodes as they hit the ground. It may not make much sense but it is certainly hard to say it isn’t fun to watch.

Neptune/Plutia Combination Attack (Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory)

Anyone who has ever made jokes about overblown special attacks in JRPGs will probably get a kick out of this one. This attack starts off with both Neptune and Plutia raining bullets upon their enemies. They then proceed to fire one last shot that blows up the entire planet… with a disclaimer in the bottom right telling us that this isn’t actually happening and Plutia wondering if maybe they went a bit overboard. This special attack manages to cover both being over the top and being funny at the same time, which makes it worthy of mentioning.

Steve started with oprainfall not long after the campaign moved from the IGN forums to Facebook. Ever since, he has been fighting to give all non-mainstream RPGs a fair voice. As the site admin, he will continue to do this and even show there is value in what some would deem "pure ecchi." He loves niche games and anime more than anything... well, except maybe Neptune.
