A nice boost all around in this week’s Media Create charts. This stems from the Bon Festival that happened last week. For those that don’t know what that is, Bon is a Japanese Buddhist time of honoring one’s ancestors. The festival last for three days.
The hardware side definitely felt the effects of the holiday as all consoles except for PS3 saw an increase in sales. The most significant increases came at the top with the 3DS, Vita, Wii U and PS4 all going up by at least 20%. Also, the 3DS hit 16 million units sold in the region. It has about 1 million to go before it can pass the Game Boy Advance for 8th all-time in the region.
Over on software, Nintendo was the big winner of the holiday. The company not only took 15 spots in the Top 20 but saw 11 of those 15 increase in sales from last week. The games that didn’t see an increase were either newly released, games that released last week, or Yo-kai Watch 2, which still finished first after selling 118,526, dropping 2% from last week.
Leading the new games this week is Hyrule Warriors. The Koei Tecmo-Nintendo collaboration finished second with 69,090 units sold for its first weekend. Not quite the numbers we were hoping for. The market might just be too flooded with Warriors games at the moment. The only game in the series to sell really well in the past 4 years was the first One Piece Pirate Warriors game with over 800,000. All the others seem to be hovering around the 200,000-400,000. It’s tough to say how this will finish. Let’s hope it does better in the West next month.
As for the other new game this week, we have Monster Hunter Frontier G: Beginner’s Package for the Vita. While I would love to see the franchise make a mark on the Vita, the low initial sales for the game don’t really make you believe it will happen, whether it’s people having the game already or maybe just aren’t into their Monster Hunter being an MMO. Let me know what you think.
As for returning games, Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission 2 passed the 100,000 mark. Meanwhile, Yoshi’s New Island for the 3DS and Mario Kart 8 for Wii U saw the most significant gains this past week, increase sales by about 10,000 each. And going back to Yo-kai Watch 2, the game is about two weeks away from passing Mario Kart 7 on the list of all-time best selling 3DS games in Japan. Also, if it averages about 41,500 units sold per week, it could pass the 3 million mark before the year is out, joining the ranks of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Monster Hunter 4, and Pokemon X & Y.
