Earlier today at the Microsoft Media Briefing event, Square Enix announced the next installment in the long-running Tomb Raider franchise, Rise of the Tomb Raider, with a world premiere teaser trailer. Check it out below:
As the game was just announced, very little information is available right now. Players will once again take on the role of Lara Croft. The trailer shows shots of Lara in therapy, presumably after the events of the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot, intercut with shots of her adventuring, ending with Lara in a seemingly underground city. The game will be launching in 2015 for the Xbox One. As the game was announced at the Microsoft Media Briefing, there has not yet been word about a release on other platforms, but I’d expect to see the game on the PlayStation 4 and PC due to the franchise’s tendency for multiplatform releases.
The Tomb Raider franchise was created by Core Design with the original Tomb Raider in 1996. After poor sales of the fifth title in the franchise, Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, development of the franchise was handed off to Crystal Dynamics. After developing three more Tomb Raider games, Crystal Dynamics rebooted the series to critical and commercial success with Tomb Raider in 2013. Given the quality of the previous game, Rise of the Tomb Raider should be one to watch.
