Yikes! This was a bad week for the gaming industry in Japan. No console was able to sell over 20,000. No game came close to 40,000. Out of everything shown in this week’s Media Create charts, only two things saw an increase: Yo-kai Watch and the PSP — both by less than 5%.
And its kind of sad that this is the week that Yo-kai Watch takes the lead. As I said, it did gain sales, moving 34,690 units in the past week. And there have been about 1 million units of Yo-kai Watch shipped to stores, half of which came since the anime started. Kind of makes me wonder if Hero Bank will ever see a return to the list. We’ll see.
Anyways, on to the new games this week. We start with the third place game, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn for the PS4. The well received expansion to the underwhelming Final Fantasy XIV was able to move just over 31,000 units, although it didn’t do enough to give the young console a boost.
Next is Ace Attorney 123, the compilation of the first three games in Capcom’s crime solving franchise. The SKU was able to move just under 27,000 total units for the week. No word on if this will be coming West.
Next is the upgraded Style Savvy: Trendsetters (or Nintendo presents: New Style Boutique as gamers in the PAL region know it). This version includes five new modes, including Fortune-Telling, an AR Photo Studio, and a dating simulator. It was able to move around 12,000 units, but gamers could also download it as a free upgrade to the original game. No word on if this is coming West.
After that, we have Juuzaengi: Engetsu Sangokuden 2, a visual novel from Idea Factory. The game is set in the late Han Dynasty in China and follows a group known as the Maozoku (cat race). The game sold about 8,500 units.
Finally, we have Detective Conan Phantom Rhapsody. This is the latest game in the long running franchise that is actually known as Case Closed in the West. It started as a manga in 1994 and moved over to anime in 1996. The first of the video games released that same year on the Game Boy. This new iteration was able to move 8,000 units.
As for returning games, 3rd Super Robot Wars Z stayed in the Top 5 with the PS3 port. Both the PS3 and Vita versions took a dive this week, losing 78% and 86% respectively — which corresponds with the 74% and 83% sell out rate the first weekend. Mario Party: Island Tour sold 18,848 units, moving past the 300,000 mark. Fossil Fighters: Infinite Gear holds on to its Top 20 spot with 4,144 units sold, moving its lifetime total to 140,178. And we also see the return of Puzzle & Dragons Z and Monster Hunter 4 to the Top 20.
