Ladies and gentlemen, we have witnessed something truly amazing in today’s Media Create charts, something that will most certainly be written in the history books, something that will most certainly be talked about for generations.

The PlayStation 4 has overtaken Knack.

Lifetime Sales Totals
PlayStation 4 410.133
Knack 393.348

PS4 and Dual Shock 4 - Media Create | oprainfall

A bit overly dramatic, yes. But can you really blame me? The week was rather slow for Japan. The top-selling game couldn’t top 50,000. But there were a few highlights to note from this week.

PS Vita - Media Create | oprainfall

For starters, the Vita continues to trend upwards since the release of the PS4, rising 10,000 units for a weekly total of 33,287. As a matter of fact, the Vita is actually ahead of where it was last year despite only selling around 50% of the units it did this time last year. (Keep in mind, that was at the time of the initial price cut.)

PS Vita Yearly Sales (10 Weeks)
2013 227.163
2014 291.196

Soul Sacrifice Delta - Media Create | oprainfall

In addition, the Vita got a boost this week from the release of Soul Sacrifice Delta, the sequel to the original Soul Sacrifice released one year before almost to the date. Comparatively speaking, the sequel is unfortunately about halfway to matching the original’s first-week total of 92,396.

First-Week Sales
Soul Sacrifice (March 7, 2013) 92.396
Soul Sacrifice Delta (March 6, 2014) 48.786

Ar nosurge - Media Create | oprainfall

Over on the home hardware side of Sony, Ar nosurge was released this past week. The prequel to Ar tonelico and continuation of Ciel nosurge had rather modest sales numbers. While they don’t look great, they’re not that bad. The top-selling game in the series in Japan was Ar tonelico Qaga: Knell of Ar Ciel with around 130,000 units sold. It has a ways to go, but it’s doing okay.

3DS and Wii U - Media Create | oprainfall

On the Nintendo side of things, the Wii U continues to dip thanks to Japan’s rejection of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Meanwhile, the 3DS continues to lag behind last year’s numbers at a rate of nearly 2 to 1.

3DS Yearly Sales (10 Weeks)
2013 1.045.423
2014 553.094

Dragon Quest Monsters 2 - Media Create | oprainfall Yo-kai Watch - Media Create | oprainfall
Pokémon X & Y - Media Create | oprainfall Harvest Moon: Linking the New World - Media Create | oprainfall

But even with the problems on hardware, the software side of things continues to go well. The 3DS was able to take eight spots in the Top 20. Yo-kai Watch was able to break the 500,000 mark easily, with Kirby Triple Deluxe not far from doing the same. Meanwhile, Dragon Quest Monsters 2 continues its march toward a possible million sales, while Pokémon X and Y close in on 4 million combined sales. Finally, Harvest Moon: Linking the New World drops a bit but is still doing well as it looks to find a spot among the best-selling Harvest Moon games in Japan.
