Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze had a lot of hype going into the release. But from what critics have been saying, the game is going to be worth the hype. We’re all excited for its release this Friday. And judging by the Media Create numbers, it looks like Japan couldn’t wai…
Wait, what were those numbers again?
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze | 35.717 |
…
This is bad. This is really bad. There is no sugar coating this result. No main series Donkey Kong platformer since Donkey Kong Country has sold less than a million copies in Japan (the Game Boy games don’t count since those were just smaller versions of the SNES games), including the Wii’s Donkey Kong Country Returns with just over 1 million. Tropical Freeze looks like it won’t even get to half of that. It doesn’t even look like it will match the numbers for DKC Returns 3D, which were around 320,000.
Where’s that savior list? I need to update it.

I’m baffled by this. I don’t know what to say. Hopefully, Mario Kart 8 doesn’t tank like that when it releases in May.
It was a slow week as well on the 3DS side of things for Nintendo. Sales for the hardware fell about 10,000, which drops its Year-to-Date to about half of what is was at this time last year when Animal Crossing really pushed the sales. But it wasn’t as terrible on the software side of things as the 3DS held 13 of the 20 spots. Leading the way for the second week was Dragon Quest Monsters 2 with A-Train 3D (the latest in the vehicle simulation series) in 3rd, Kirby Triple Deluxe in 4th, Yo-kai Watch in 5th, Magi: A New World (the latest from the Magi franchise) in 6th, Puzzle & Dragons Z in 7th, Puyo Puyo Tetris in 8th, and Pokemon X & Y in 10th.
Also of note, Yo-kai Watch continues to be a success for Level-5. It has been reported that the company has shipped 500,000 copies of the game to stores. Hopefully we’ll see this game come to the West soon, especially with Level-5 being vocal about wanting your opinion about it on their Facebook and Twitter. If you haven’t done so yet, go let them know that you want it.
Other than that, it’s good to see the Vita holding when nothing released for it this week. I’m actually fine with 18,000 being the baseline for the system. That’s definitely progress for the system.
And brace for impact. The PS4 is coming to Japan on Saturday.
