It seems that there are a pair of elephants in the room in this week’s Media Create charts. Might as well address them first.
Elephant #1 is Puzzle & Dragons Z, a 3DS iteration of the popular Puzzle & Dragons series. Paraphrasing our Translation Manager Will Whitehurst, Puzzle & Dragons to Japan is similar to Angry Birds for us here in the West. It’s just this big cultural phenomenon that has taken over the region. So, while the gaudy number does stand out this week with nothing close to it, it’s not completely surprising.
What’s more surprising is elephant #2, also known as the Wii U sales numbers. You can argue “holiday numbers” but this seems ridiculous. Wii U had an increase of about 54%, more than any other flagship console on the list — the Wii had a larger percentage increase with 56%. In addition, unlike the 3DS, which increased by 45%, the Wii U didn’t have any new titles on the list. As a matter of fact, it actually lost a major release last week in Dragon Quest X from this week’s list.
Actually, if you look at all the Nintendo numbers, the company not only dominated the lists but also saw increases of nearly all titles that placed this week, including a 32% increase for Super Mario 3D World and a 47% increase for Pokemon X and Y — for the record, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Tomodachi Collection: New Life had the biggest percentage increases, both adding over 70% in sales each. The only placing titles from Nintendo consoles that went down were Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai 2, Attack on Titan: The Last Wings of Mankind, and Inazuma Eleven GO 3: Galaxy – Big Bang and Supernova (the 2 latter titles released last week).
Other than that, there isn’t much else to talk about. The only other games that released this past week were Nobunaga’s Ambition: Creation — the 14th title in the series — and a dubbed edition of Call of Duty: Ghosts. The Vita TV continues to undersell, garnering 5,506 units sold of the near 36,000 the Vita line sold this past week. And while the PS3 did net 5 games on the list, all returning titles dropped in sales from last week.
