Young Frankenstein - Media Create | oprainfall
It lives! …at least for this week.

Well, the Wii U is showing more signs of life in this week’s Media Create chart. The console, which reached the one year mark in Japan this past week, was able to increase its weekly sales count by 20,000 over last week. There could be a couple of reasons for that. First, Nintendo typically has good holiday sales, so this isn’t out of the ordinary. Second, there’s a Dragon Quest release in Japan; there’s going to be increased console sales, even for one week.

So, what do we have on the Wii U Savior list:

  • Sonic Lost W0rld
  • Wii Fit U
  • Wii Party U
  • Wii Sports Club
  • Super Mario 3D World – (Subject to change)
  • Dragon Quest X: Nemureru Yuusha to Michibiki no Meiyuu Online – (Subject to change)
  • Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (February 2014)
  • Mario Kart 8 (April 2014)
  • Bayonetta 2 (2014)
  • X (2014)
  • Super Smash Bros. (2014)

Hang on, what happened to Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics? I know it was bad, but I didn’t realize that it was bad enough that it not only missed the Media Create chart in its first week but missed the Famitsu Top 30.

By the way, that’s a second version of Dragon Quest X that translates out to “The Sleeping Brave and the Guided Allies Online”. I don’t know exactly what it means by second version, whether it’s like an expansion like Mists of Pandaria for World of Warcraft or if its a separate title like Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII for the Final Fantasy XIII mini-series.

Tearaway - Media Create | oprainfall

Speaking of games that disappeared, what happened to Tearaway? I know it didn’t do well in some of the other regions but wasn’t it also a critically acclaimed game? Could someone who has played this game tell why this game hasn’t sold well?

Meanwhile, the 3DS had a great week. The system passed the 14 million mark for the Japanese region as it marches up the charts. And sometime next year, it will pass the near 17 million that the Game Boy Advance sold and the 17.2 million that the Super Nintendo sold in the region.

Monster Hunter 4 - Media Create | oprainfall

Also of note for the 3DS was Monster Hunter 4 hitting 3 million sold in Japan. This is the third game on the console to reach the mark, along with Pokemon X & Y and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. It should be noted that this is the second individual game on the 3DS to reach 3 million (while Pokemon X & Y is counted together, it is two separate titles).

Other new releases:

Bravely Default: For the Sequel - Media Create | oprainfall

Bravely Default: For the Sequel has released in the region. This is a remastered version of the original Bravely Default: Flying Fairy with slight changes to the main game. Remember, this is the version that is coming over to the Americas in February and released in the PAL regions last week.

Attack on Titan: The Last Wings of Mankind released this past week. Based on the popular anime and manga of the same name–or at least the same Attack on Titan name–the game opened with 93,000 sales, good enough for 4th on this week’s Top 20.

–Coming in 5th is the newest Inazuma Eleven game. Inazuma Eleven GO 3: GalaxyBig Bang & Supernova is the third game in the spin-off GO series. The game follows the Shinsei Inazuma Japan team as they play through the Football Frontier International Vision 2 tournament. Given that neither of the GO series games have made it West, this one will probably stay in Japan.
