And now, I do my impression of a number of users on NeoGAF as they see that Sonic Lost World on Wii U missed the Media Create Top 20 (or even Top 30 for Famitsu):
Oh no, Sonic missed the list…ZOMG, death sentence for any third party Wii U exclusive…Sonic Lost Sales, lol.
Now for actual analysis.
Sonic the Hedgehog has NEVER been a major seller in the Japanese market. In fact, the top selling Sonic game in the region is Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games on the Wii. Mario has to carry him nowadays and only to around 660,000 units (according to VGChartz). The best selling actual Sonic game is Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast with around 460,000 units sold. And as for recent Sonic games, the top Generations port was PS3 with around 20,000 units and Colors–another game that was released on a Nintendo console and handheld–sold merely 20,000-30,000 units between the Wii and DS (for comparison, the rest of the world bought about 2.62 million copies between the two systems).
So, in a way, with the 3DS version of Sonic Lost World selling almost 5,000 in its first week, that port is going to be the most successful Sonic game for Japan in years after a few weeks.
As for the Wii U port, I can’t say that I’m surprised because, after looking at the previous game numbers, I was expecting low sales. I guess that’s one game we can cross off our “Potential Wii U Saviors” list. What else do we have:
Sonic Lost World- Wii Fit U (10/30 Digital Release, February 2014 Physical Release)
- Wii Party U (10/31)
- Wii Sports Club (10/31 Digital Only)
- Super Mario 3D World (11/21)
- Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games (12/05)
- Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (February 2014)
- Mario Kart 8 (April 2014)
- Bayonetta 2 (2014)
- X (2014)
- Super Smash Bros. (2014)
As I said before, there will be at least one game that drives sales for the young console. It’s only a matter of which one will do it.
BlazBlue: Chronophantasma, the latest game in Arc System Works’ fighting franchise, launched last week for PS3 with a total of 72,464, good enough for 3rd place this week. The game has been out in arcades in Japan for nearly a year and will be coming to North America next year.
For those that are looking for new anime-style games and have no issues importing, here’s one for you: Diabolik Lovers: More, Blood, a visual novel, otome game for the PSP. This is the second game in the romantic, supernatural series being developed by Rejet and published by Idea Factory. There is also an anime going on right now that has been licensed for North America by Sentai Filmworks.
While there aren’t any notable milestones hit this week, I expect to see a number of milestones passed within the next month, including a couple of 3 million sellers in Monster Hunter 4 and Pokémon X & Y.
