So, this is interesting. We’re still getting more overall sales than in previous weeks in the Media Create charts, thanks to Monster Hunter 4 and the 3DS. But we’re seeing lethargic sales numbers for everything else besides those two. It took 16,000 units for Yahari Game Demo Ore no Seishun Love-Kome Hamachi Gatteiru to get second place. Last place Mushi Bugyou needed just above 3,000 units sold to even make the list. Aside from Monster Hunter 4, no game had any good sales numbers.
Speaking of Monster Hunter 4, the new iteration of Capcom’s Monster Hunter franchise has eclipsed the 2,000,000 sold mark, making it the fourth game on the 3DS that has reached the milestone in Japan (others were Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Mario Kart 7, and New Super Mario Bros. 2). It is also the quickest of the games to reach that mark, resetting the record to less than 9 days.
In other milestone news, the PSP, Sony’s original handheld console, is one week away from reaching 20,000,000 units sold in Japan for its lifetime. This will mark only the second time in the company’s history that they will reach the 20 million mark with a console in the region. The only other time was with the PlayStation 2, which sold just above 23 million in Japan and is the best selling console of all-time worldwide. It will also be the fourth console in history to reach that mark in the region, along with the PS2, the Game Boy (32 million), and the Nintendo DS (33 million).
Speaking of passing marks, the 3DS has actually passed the Wii in terms of lifetime sales in Japan. The latest flagship handheld for Nintendo now has 12,752,731 units sold compared to the Wii’s current 12,698,878 units sold. For those keeping score at home, that moves the 3DS into 6th place for most units sold in Japan for Nintendo consoles. Next on the list is the Game Boy Advance with roughly 16.9 million sold in its lifetime in the region.
