Mr. Runner, a comedic and free iOS game by Zing Games, is getting a sequel called Mr. Runner 2: The Masks. The original Mr. Runner had more than 5 million downloads on iOS platforms, and was awarded for its “high quality content and originality”, earning itself a golden pass at the Global Game Stars Summit.
According to the press release we received from Zing Games, Mr. Runner 2: The Masks is a running platformer where players are thrust into an absurd world made from the protagonist’s subconscious, running to catch up to an enigmatic figure holding the key to his identity, all whilst avoiding large and unpredictably imaginative obstacles. His masks are susceptible to change, like the ever-transforming cartoon world of the game, offering him identities from pop culture icons, recognizable superheroes, and even classic video game characters.
The game will include many features, such as 32 levels across four worlds with different themes (i.e. an 80’s arcade), 54 collectible masks inspired by popular and gaming culture, 5 costumes with special abilities, and animated characters in vibrant and dream-like worlds.
Here are some screenshots:
Mr. Runner 2: The Masks looks way wackier than its predecessor thanks to its improved artstyle and use of color, which actually benefit the animated and adventurous feel that Zing Games seems to be going for. While the first Mr. Runner looks simple and humble by design, this next game definitely takes that wacky vision to the next level. Here are screens from the original Mr. Runner:
Also, here’s a trailer for anyone with smartphones who are on the fence about this game:
This game looks incredibly energetic, and would be appealing for anybody who wants to play a simple and wacky game. The absurd kinds of imagery like the giant rolling pizza Pac-Man, or the orange whale with sun rays behind it are amusing enough for me to give it a shot.
Mr. Runner 2: The Masks will officially launch on iOS on Wednesday, April 24.
