The Wii U looked alive in this week’s Media Create charts, doubling its sales from last week. Actually, the Wii U sales seem to be up across the globe this past week. The UK apparently saw a 125% increase in Wii U sales. However, that seems to be the result of a price cut from retailer HMV and the release of two high-profile games in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and LEGO City Undercover. The Japanese spike seems to be from two new games, though with what I can only describe as humbling sales numbers.
The Wii U had two new games make the Top 20 in Dragon Quest X and Game & Wario, debuting at 33,302 and 22,491 respectively. While the numbers for Game & Wario are a bit disconcerting, it’s the Dragon Quest X numbers that have me the most puzzled. This is a series that is well-received in Japan. The last three new releases each saw sales of at least 3.5 million. Remakes and spin-offs sell well over a million.
There are three reasons why I think this might be happening. 1) Dragon Quest VII for the 3DS was released recently, and people are still playing that, which means that sales could remain steady and become fairly good for DQX. 2) It’s an MMO and perhaps there are many Wii U owners that just don’t want to pay subscription fees for it, which means that sales could be lower than the normal Dragon Quest game. 3) Most consumers will probably save their money and buy the Wii version (or have already bought the Wii version as over 600,000 people have) instead of having to get a new console just to play the game, which means that sales could be terrible (by Dragon Quest standards).
For the rest of Nintendo, the 3DS continues to reign on the hardware side of things with Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon holding the top spot again in software, capturing 110,000 in sales. Meanwhile, Animal Crossing: New Leaf gets third place and is now one week away from reaching 3,000,000 in sales. And New Super Mario Bros. 2 is closing in on the 2,000,000 mark, which would make it the third 3DS game to eclipse this mark in Japan (Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Mario Kart 7 have already accomplished this before now).
On the Sony side of things, it was a good week to be Marvelous AQL, scoring two games in the Top 5. The first was PSP game Fate/Extra CCC, securing 72,883 in sales for second place. The second was the updated Vita port of Muramasa: The Demon Blade, selling 45,660. The latter is expected to be released in North America this summer by Aksys Games, while there are currently no localization plans for Fate/Extra CCC.
