Chrono Break: The Lost Conclusion

A fan’s take on a logo we may never see.

Chrono Trigger was ported to the Nintendo DS in 2008. This is far and away the definitive version of the game because it has everything that made the SNES and PSX versions great, plus added portability and extra content.

Yes, extra content. Content that has you fighting ‘Steel Shades’ of certain characters, speculated to be the apparitions that appear in Chrono Cross. Content that features an ending in which Magus discards his identity after realizing he’s not strong enough to save his sister. Mostly, these added bits of story amount to some cumbersome sidequests and…more questions.

Squaresoft / Square-Enix registered a trademark for “Chrono Break” a long time ago. It’s been so long, as a matter of fact, that the trademark has expired. Imagine that!

The absolutely tireless analysis I’ve written, as well as similar analysis I’ve read that goes into much further detail in order to explain what happened in the Chrono games versus the philosophy and emotions they yield… has convinced me I never want to see Chrono Break.

Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are two perfect balances of one another; one is yin and the other is yang. Even though the ending of the second game left a lot to be desired, I feel like compromising the delicate balance these two games create would indeed break the entire series.

Although, maybe that’s the point, in which case I salute Masato Kato for the idea that has yet / will never (?) come to fruition. It should come quite clear to anyone who’s made it to the end of this venture that the Chrono series contains some of my most cherished memories as a person and as a player. I’ve even gone so far as to have part of the Chrono series’ iconic clock tattooed upon my left shoulder.

I’ve paid my memories of the series their proper respect. I suppose all I can do now is wait to hear what you all think of them, and…

Let fate take its course…!

I sport the Gate Key offered at Fangamer.com as a necklace.
