Oprainfall Awards

Once again the staff at Operation Rainfall came together and casted their votes in another one of our infamous Top 10 lists. This time we voted on what we thought were the best music tracks, from Xenoblade Chronicles, in a new feature we’re calling: Top 10 VGM (stands for Video Game Music, in case you were wondering).

Over the next few weeks/months we’ll be creating more Top 10 VGM lists from all kinds of different games and we’ll also be asking for your suggestions on what games soundtrack we should cover next. It should be very exciting.

Anyway, back to Xenoblade Chronicles‘ soundtrack. As usual, all music from the soundtrack was put to a staff vote. We thought the voting for our previous Top 10 lists was scary enough, but nothing prepared us for the torment and nightmarish atmosphere that this round of voting would cause. Some watched in despair as their favourite track failed to make the Top 10, whilst others cried fowl of the voting being rigged. However, after many days and hours of persuading each other on which piece of music to vote for, we have finally come to what we believe is a very impressive Top 10 VGM of Xenoblade Chronicles.

I‘m sorry, but you didn’t make it.

As mentioned before, not everyones favourite pieces of music could make it into the Top 10, so here are the tracks that just missed out.

WARNING: Potential Spoilers Ahead.

10. The God – Slaying Sword (composed by ACE+)

The music that plays during your encounter of the final boss starts off our list at No 10. Who the final boss is, I won’t say, but rest assured that this piece of music fits perfectly. The piece starts with what sounds like a Gregorian chant complete with organ and expands to a full symphonic orchestra with church bells and a choir, which makes sense, given the song’s title – gloriously epic.

9. To the Last Battle (composed by ACE+)

The title of this piece may give away at what point in the game you get to listen to it; but nothing feels more suitable then hearing this adrenaline building composition as you head towards the final fight.  The main melody in this and in Gaur Plains sound very similar; but while Gaur Plains has a more upbeat and cheerful arrangement, this has a much more sombre and serious one.

8. Engage the Enemy (composed by ACE+)

This piece of music plays throughout Xenoblade Chronicles, especially during some of the more epic, cinematic cutscenes. The contrast between the harsher sounding electric guitar and the sweeter sounding violins really emphasises the moments in the game where the protagonists are about to fight some of the more unfriendly enemies.

David Rawlings
David Rawlings, or ‘Rawky’ as we like to call him, joined the Operation Rainfall Campaign at the beginning. He’s British and found solace with us as he was able to understand our pain about Nintendo and their localizing faux pas. He’s a big fan of the letter ‘U’ and refuses to remove them from words, even though we constantly ask him to. He also believes it’s about time Princess Daisy got kidnapped.
