Final Fantasy VII
One of the most polarizing entries in the series today, likely because it had the distinction of also being one of the most popular upon release, Final Fantasy VII is now on Steam. It is now conveniently available to anyone with a computer and internet connection on Valve’s PC game distribution service without having to search used game shops the world over or wait for that shipment that always takes twice as long as it should. But at $11.99 is it the right price? There’s always controversy over the pricing of games that are re-released well after their initial launch, particularly on accessible platforms like Steam, but gamers tend to be more forgiving if the game is rare or hard to find. The loose prices for Final Fantasy VII aren’t that high, though higher than they probably should be for a popular 1997 game. A complete package with the case and manual doesn’t generally fetch for much more than the disc alone. It’s the same story for the PC version, except the “new” prices aren’t as high, but I can tell you from owning the PC version myself that the packaging was nothing special. Buying Final Fantasy VII on Steam may be your best deal.

Moon
It’s been recently announced that in 2014 Renegade Kid will be acquiring the rights to the Nintendo DS first person shooter they made titled Moon. Renegade Kid has received attention lately for Mutant Mudds and the upcoming Treasurenauts, but back in the Nintendo DS era they were known for pushing the system to create atmospheric FPS games like the Dementium series and Moon. They have been big supporters of Nintendo’s portable systems, and look to continue their legacy of portable FPS games with the upcoming Cult Country, but with this recent announcement there are questions about what could be done with the Moon IP back in the hands of its creators. You can get acquainted with the game for very cheap buying the game used before the big announcements happen and be ready for what’s next from Renegade Kid.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Atlus and the Shin Megami Tensei series has been in the news a bit lately, primarily because Atlus’s parent company Index has filed for bankruptcy and is proceeding through rehabilitation to recover. Fortunately the Atlus brand seems to be surviving intact, with Shin Megami Tensei IV being released in North America very soon, and even a mysterious Persona 5 domain registration popping up recently. The main Shin Megami Tensei series doesn’t receive nearly as much attention as the associated Persona series, which has built momentum on the releases of Persona 3 and Persona 4 on various platforms. However, the brand has been spreading through other spin offs as well, such as the Devil Survivor and Devil Summoner series. As far reaching as the brand is, Shin Megami Tensei IV brings a strong reminder that there is a mainline series that spawned all these popular games from its own merits. If you haven’t checked out some of the main series yet, these games may deserve a look. You can get Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, third in the main series, for PlayStation 2 pretty cheap on the grey market.
