Nintendo today unveiled the first trailer for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker for the Wii U.

The original GameCube title’s hook was sailing – rather than traversing a world map, Link set out across the sea.  When he needed to change directions, Link could use a conductor’s baton, the titular Wind Waker, to change the direction of the wind and, like the Ocarina and other instruments through the series, the baton held other functions as well.  The unique art style has been updated to take advantage of the Wii U’s power and HD television sets, as Iwata said the game’s assets have been redrawn for 1080p.

The Wind Waker was one of a handful of GameCube titles that utilized the Game Boy Advance link cable, allowing the player to use Tingle to find and access hidden areas. In this updated version, Nintendo has added a new item called the Tingle Bottle. Players can put messages and screenshots into the bottle, and upload the bottle to Miiverse. These bottles will wash up on other players’ beaches.

Expect The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker to release on Wii U this October. Check out new screens from the trailer below.
