Please note there could be plot spoilers for the games and anime mentioned, and while these characters come from older series I just wanted to give a heads up.

To get into the Valentine’s Day spirit we decided to do a list of our favorite couples from anime and video games. After some debate and scientific method we came up with a list of our five best of all time. Let’s see if you agree that couples on our list show what true love is all about!

No. 5 Fei and Elly (Xenogears)

Our own Tyler Trosper had this to say about this couple:

“The love between Fei and Elly is a long and complicated story – a tale that covers thousands of years. Over the course of many lives, going as far back as the the crashing of the Eldridge on the planet Xenogears takes place on, Fei and Elly have always found each other. Whether those lives dictate the two to be on the same side or the opposite, their attraction for each other always won out. Of course, to discuss the complexity and depth of a love as old as theirs is a daunting task in and of itself. However, to fall in love time and again, without remembering any of their previous lives, is a testament to the bond the two share.”

No. 4 Celes and Locke (Final Fantasy VI)

Final Fantasy VI is yet another highly regarded JRPG from the 16-bit era of gaming. I remember first playing this game as kid and being blown away by its greatness. One of the most memorable scenes in the game is the opera scene, which is one of the highlights of our next couple Celes and Locke. Both coming from troubled past, the pair meet under some unique conditions to say the least. They hit it off, and this leads to one of the greatest and most interesting pairings in the Final Fantasy franchise.

No. 3 Naruto and Hinata (Naruto Anime)

Dalton had this to say about this couple, since this is one of his favorite anime:

“Two lovers that we fans were destined to believe would never be together due to the sheer ignorance of the lead character, but alas, it happened anyway. Naruto and Hinata have two polar opposite personalities that are somehow able to blend together, and have possibly the best chemistry out of any anime couple. When these two are on screen together, you just can’t help but smile at Hinata’s vain attempts to confess her feelings to Naruto. These two characters are both incredibly kind and strong-willed, making them one of anime’s greatest couples”

No. 2 Chrono and Marle (Chrono Trigger)

Chrono Trigger is often called one of the best JRPGs of all time, and quite frankly it deserves all the praise that it receives. One big factor in this was the relationship between protagonist Chrono and Marle, whose name is Nadia, and she is actually a princess. Their chance meeting at the Millennial Fair would spark one of the greatest romances in gaming history as the two become close very quickly. Marle even goes for broke in a effort to revive Chrono after his untimely demise at the hands of Lavos. This leads to one of the most powerful scenes in gaming history – it’s never gotten any better than this!

No.1 Yuri and Alice (Shadow Hearts)

Jenae had this to say about our winning couple!

“Alice Elliot began as a damsel in distress, about to be kidnapped by her father’s killer. Yuri Hyuga was the soon-to-be hero, merely following what a mysterious voice in his head insisted he do. He reluctantly obeyed and saved Alice at the behest of this unknown voice. Though at first she didn’t trust him, Alice went along with Yuri anyways and over time, they helped each other out. They traveled across Asia together, fighting monsters and running from people who were after Alice. They ended up becoming very close and while originally Alice had been the one saved, she later came to save Yuri, happily making the ultimate sacrifice in offering up her own soul in return for his. Only a few years later, after various strange circumstances and no longer finding joy in anything without his lost love, Yuri got an unexpected chance to travel back in time. He chose to relive the best moment of his life, the day he met Alice aboard that train. Alice Elliot and Yuri Hyuga make each other better and they are one truly amazing couple, two characters who belong together.”

Steve Baltimore
Steve started with oprainfall not long after the campaign moved from the IGN forums to Facebook. Ever since, he has been fighting to give all non-mainstream RPGs a fair voice. As the site admin, he will continue to do this and even show there is value in what some would deem "pure ecchi." He loves niche games and anime more than anything... well, except maybe Neptune.
