Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale | North America Premiere

Aniplex USA held a livestream event titled Aniplex LIVE recently. During this event, Aniplex USA announced details for the North American release of Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale. The film is set to premiere on March 1 at the Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, CA. Tickets for the premiere event go on sale on November 15 at 12:00 pm PST (3:00 pm EST).

You can purchase tickets for the premiere event HERE.

A nationwide release for the film is set to follow the initial premiere event. The theater locations and dates will be provided at a later time. The film will be screened with the original Japanese audio and English subs. Aniplex USA is working with Eleven Arts to release the film in North America.

Aniplex USA describes the story as follows:

In 2022, the world of virtual reality was upended by the arrival of a new invention from a genius programmer, Akihiko Kayaba. Called NerveGear, it was the first full-dive system and with it, came endless possibilities to VRMMORPGs.
In 2026, a new machine called the Augma is developed to compete against the NerveGear and its successor, the Amusphere. A next-gen wearable device, the Augma doesn’t have a full-dive function like its predecessors. Instead, it uses Augmented Reality (AR) to get players into the game. It is safe, user-friendly and lets users play while they are conscious, making it an instant hit on the market. The most popular game on the system is “Ordinal Scale” (aka: OS), an ARMMORPG developed exclusively for the Augma.
Asuna and the gang have already been playing OS for a while, by the time Kirito decides to join them. They’re about to find out that Ordinal Scale isn’t all fun and games…
Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale | Asuna and Yuna

Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale will feature an original story by Reki Kawahara and takes place in a new game called “Ordinal Scale.” “Ordinal Scale” is an Augmented Reality game unlike the previous games which were Virtual Reality. The film takes place after the Mother’s Rosario arc. Tomohiko Ito returns to direct the film and Yuki Kaijura will compose the music.
