Windscape

 

Windscape is a first-person exploration game, created by Dennis Witte. The creator himself is a huge admirer of games like The Legend of Zelda, Secret of Mana, and Golden Axe Warrior (among many others). Dennis’ goal with Windscape is to bring you a modern version of both the spirit and flow of the classics in the genre. At the same time, Windscape strives to create a fresh blend of genres. This includes the best qualities of modern exploration, survival, and crafting games.

But the game’s vision is not yet complete, and the developer wants you, the player, to help him. That’s why Headup Games announced today that Windscape will be entering Early Access tomorrow.


Windscape takes place in Sky Harbor, a world composed of floating islands among the clouds. If you’re a Zelda fan, this may conjure memories of Skyloft, but the floating islands of Sky Harbor are much larger. You’ll step into the shoes of an adolescent girl sent by her parents to deliver goods to the local Blacksmith.  This simple, seemingly insignificant errand will soon become the start of the journey of a lifetime.

You will need to fight, gather, and craft as you explore this world. Meanwhile, your feedback to the developers will help mold the game and determine how it grows and develops. You can request a Beta Key (details below) and start adventuring tomorrow, but for now here’s the trailer:

Sent out by her parents to run an errand to deliver goods the local blacksmith in Sky Harbor, Windscape’s adolescent heroine is not aware that the journey of a lifetime has just started.

While she is taking her first steps into a world beyond her parent’s farm gates, she comes to realize that the floating islands have started to break apart and something apocalyptic is threatening her once peaceful world. On her journey ahead she (and thus you) will need to gather, craft and fight while exploring a universe in the making.

“In the making” because Dennis Witte, the creative mind behind Windscape, has chosen the path of Early Access to create this game in the most transparent and community-driven way possible. Over the next months, players will be closely tied to the development of the game.

Start crafting and exploring on Steam Early Access this Wednesday

Headup Games today announces the imminent Steam Early Access release of Windscape, a first-person exploration adventure set in a lovely world made up of floating islands in the sky. The game has been in development since late 2014. Dennis Witte, the creator and a huge admirer of Zelda, Secret of Mana or Golden Axe Warrior (to name a few) is striving to deliver a modern vision of the spirit and flow of the genre classics while adding the best qualities of modern exploration, crafting and survival games, resulting in a unique and fresh blend of genres.

About Windscape

Ever since his childhood Dennis was a huge fan of Zelda games, Golden Axe Warrior, Secret of Mana and games that encourage you to explore a vivid world without time pressures and a too restrictive storyline. Over the past year and a half he was working on his vision of a modern exploration adventure, combining it with his fondness for modern crafting and sandbox games.

In Windscape you play as a young girl living on your parents’ farm, set in a lovely world made up of floating islands in the sky. As you discover the world you learn that something has gone terribly wrong – islands are breaking apart and falling from the sky! It’s up to you to discover the evil that is threatening the universe of Windscape.

As you travel the world(s) you will gather valuable resources allowing you to craft a plethora of items such as weapons, shields, potions, magical spells and much more. Some items will be just for fun while others are a necessity for your survival.

You will meet peaceful NPCs and vicious monsters on the surface of each island as well as in the dungeons and lairs you uncover along your journey. While Dennis wants the islands to work in a non-linear manner, he decided to make the dungeons more puzzle and combat driven – each with its own style and atmosphere. Windscape will feature tactical fights against larger bosses such as ghosts, ogres and dragons. Of course, there are many valuable items to loot, too.

As Dennis doesn’t want Windscape to be a stats-driven RPG, a terraforming sandbox game or a first-person action game, he is asking for your support. He is building this game for the community and hopefully with the community, so your feedback is really needed to match his vision with the high standards you, the players, demand. Because of this, we chose to enter Early Access with Windscape, hoping to make great friends and build a community which shares Dennis’ vision and aids him on his development quest…

About Michael Fontanini

Michael is a veteran gamer in my early 30s, who grew up around video games, with fond memories of the oldies like the NES and SNES. He loves Nintendo but also plays a lot of games on his PC. Michael also enjoys going for walks or bike rides, and loves animals.

Michael is also a computer programmer. This started with a toy he got as a kid called PreComputer 1000 that was made by V-Tech. It had a simple programming mode which is what started him down the road of being a programmer! Michael can program in BASIC, Visual Basic, C++, C#, and is familiar with Java and Lua Script.

Putting programming and gaming together, Michael became a hobbyist game developer which may give him some good insights on game development! Most recently, he has been playing with the free version of the Unity engine (a powerful and easy-to-use game engine).

I love Nintendo but I also play a lot of game's on PC, many of which are on steam. My favorite Nintendo game's include Zelda, Metroid, and Smash Bros to name a few. On PC I love the Half-Life games, as well as most all of the Source Engine games just to name a few.
