After a few different stories in past year, we have multiple reports of character costumes going through a few changes during localization. Tales of Berseria producer Yasuhiro Fukaya has assured fans that this will not be the case with the main protagonist Velvet.

Dualshocker‘s reports his response from a recent event:

I promise. Velvet’s costume will surely be the same in the western version. The design of that costume is created by Mutsumi Inomata, and she created that costume based on the character’s concept and setting, and on the storyline.

I believe that those who support the Tales Of series like to have exactly the same content as the Japanese version. We believe it’s ideal and the best option to bring exactly the same game experience and design to the western countries. I promise that Velvet is still Velvet in the western version.

Tales of Berseria is coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on Aug 18 in Japan; PlayStation 4 and PC in EU and NA.

  • Ayame Kajou

    Thankfully.

    • Mr0303

The moral police didn’t get to him. :^)

  • Tristan (Chili1)

The fact that things like this need to be clarified show just how pathetic the game industry is in the West, currently. It should be a given that costumes and such will remain untouched.

    • Kazkari

Everything needs to be censored so they think they have a chance of pulling idiot casuals who maybe offended by someones lack of clothes, god forbid.

  • Kazkari

Will she or the game be though considering the western versions translations of the Tales games are butchered?

I mean ToHR which I grateful to have gotten was awfully translated as an example.

    • Dgnfly

If i recall they improved their translation after a lot of backlash not just from that game but Also their horrible translation in Sword art online.

but as always they refuse to give a direct answer like most of these company’s do on translations they always use the same excuse we need to spice things up or else it gets boring or its culutral differences bullshit.

There is seriously something wrong with the industry in translating these games, when ppl who do it for free do a better job then the ppl who get paid to do so.

    • Kazkari

I know alot of these companies don’t give you any sort of answer for anything, like why certain games aren’t localised to why the translation is so poor.

I agree due to people like them I actually don’t trust paid translators, only fans as they are loyal and actually love the thing they are working on. I have no idea why we’d get bored of something we’ve chosen to buy, its Japanese why would we be expecting another countries cultural references lol?

    • Dgnfly

Its the lack of understanding from a certain group of ppl that we have to be shoved into a corner and why the translation are so poor, its all to appease the english speaking world cause they so close minded.

If i learn a translation is so bad i stop buying games from that company till i get a direct anwser, i alrdy stopped buying bandai namco games Day1 and send them a mail on it but no real anwsers as always just ignore and they expect you to buy it.

Atleast PC nowadays has fan translations for certain games that were so badly translated.

the cultural bullshit happens when kids are exposed to english only cartoons from japan cause they are massivly altered pokemon is massivly altered and other kids shows so it become routine to keep into account the Weak minded.

    • LordKaizer

i never understood the “if we use a direct translate, it’ll be boring” excuse. if it’s boring, that’s because the writing itself is boring not the translation itself. how many games got “boring” because of the translation? this is a legit question because i never played any game which was the case.

    • Dgnfly

In general it can’t be boring if you have a feel for the language, its just that mostly U.S/U.K fans are to lazy to try and understand that cause those are the only 2 regions that want english dub, and need a game adepted for their so called cultural differences.

    • LordKaizer

then that’s the reason we have 4kids style of translation pop up these days. it’s because those morons can’t understand anything without inserting stupid memes on every line.

    • Dgnfly

Its all under the guise no kid left behind no matter how stupid he/she truly is, cause nowadays everybody is a winner there are no losers regardless of the facts.

Seriously the west has this mentality that in your entire life there has to be somebody holding your hand and telling you its ok to be stupid.

    • LordKaizer

that explains a lot and the reason why gaming is becoming more movie than game.

    • Dgnfly

The problem isen’t that games have become more movie, its just that games have just become so easy there is no skill behind it anymore. even fighting games nowadays have a handicap mode which kinda beats the point in learning the controls, all in the name to get casuals that never cared in the first place.

The biggest problem nowadays with gaming is trying to get the casual market like how smartphone does it, so means easier and shorter games with less complicate plots and puzzles.

  • Great! *-*

  • Wolfe

    Thank you!

  • Mr0303

Awesome. Perhaps this statement is a response to the below average sales of Star Ocean V in Japan after the diaper controversy.

    • Dgnfly

Tales games got a big backlash with its last game so it probably coulden’t take another one, but i would rather hear him say the game won’t be censored at all instead of just her.

    • Mr0303

What happened in the last game?

    • Dgnfly

The whole false marketing of alisha didn’t set to well with japanese fans, let alone western fans. Alisha was announced as main heroine but in the game she get’s kicked out of the game not even half way through the game while certain ppl have been digging and it seems they rewrote the game halfway through development. and here a more detail explanation.
Also a maybe spoiler alert for ppl who haven’t played the game

    • Mr0303

Yeah, I remember this debacle. In any case it is a good thing that Fukaya is reassuring fans of the series.

    • Dgnfly

Hideo Baba reassured fans an explanation about Tales of zesiria! and we still waiting for that explanation, but i doubt we’ll ever get a honest answer about that.

    • Kazkari

I quit buying any of the new games bar ToHR due that that faff with Alisha, I don’t like false advertising. I’ve literally bought no console games bar the first Xillia years before (and it was going abit bad then).

    • Dgnfly

Hideo Baba promised japanese dub after Tales of grace F, when he lied and Tales of xillia was english dub only i stopped buying the games, I was planning on getting Tales of zestiria but the whole false marketing and the fact i ordered their figures and wasen’t allowed to cancel was the moment i stopped giving a F about the whole game.

It was obvious that fans were getting screwed with Tales of zestiria.

  • Thank god!

  • David S

If he had said ‘nothing would be censored’ I would be happier, but he did say ‘…have exactly the same content as the Japanese version’ so I’ll take it a a good sign. Some dev’s and localizers seem to understand what we want in our games.

  • Go2hell66

    tales of titties yes please

  • Go2hell66

“The design of that costume is created by Mutsumi Inomata, and she created that costume based on the character’s concept and setting, and on the storyline.”

    hahahaha

  • senritsu

Ok, but her outfit is atrocious let’s be honest.
