Promo Art for Magnolia, Bravely Second

Bravely Second: End Layer has recently been given both a EU and NA release date. Fans of the series have been wondering if this sequel to Bravely Default will come with the same costume modifications the 2013 release received.

An image taken from the demo of Bravely Second has appeared on Reddit confirming that the character Magnolia’s “Tomahawk” outfit has been changed from a Native American to a Cowboy. The user also says that she has been given a “Southern Accent” to accompany the costume.

Bravely Second: End Layer will release on the 3DS in EU Feb 26 and NA April 15.

We have reached out to Square-Enix about this and will update the article as soon as they respond. How do you feel about this change? Let us know in the comments below.

  • This kind of thing frustrates me, because it’s based in paranoia and the fear that some media outlet will express outrage over the fact that Native Americans are portrayed in the game. I don’t even have the energy to express my full thoughts on this. There might be reasons for their choice, but those—as far as I can reason—come down to fear that the portrayal of the original character is racist or inflammatory. And if that’s the case, I’d be more accepting of dialogue adjustments than a complete removal of the minority in question.

I’m tired over the censorship of Japanese games, and it really just makes me want to learn the damn language, English releases be damned.

    • blackice85

What’s ironic is they ended up doing what actually happened in reality, the Native Americans were replaced by the cowboys.

    • azariosays

It’s scary how people who complain about content in a game loud enough to get it changed can just put the wool over their eyes and say that the censored experience is the “right” one. They can lie to themselves about particular scenes knowing full well that it’s not the creators intent.

  • James McEneely

Lovely, more potential censorship. I’ve already imported Fire Emblem, and it’ll be a shame to have to import Bravely Second because we’re actually getting a pretty decent Limited Edition this time around.

On the other hand, I’ve been meaning to learn Japanese for almost twenty years, so…

  • Vanadise

    This is absurd.

Not just because of the censorship, but because apparently it’s ok to replace one cultural stereotype with another because the new stereotype is of white people.

    • Infophile

There’s a big historical difference between the two “stereotypes”. One is based on a generalization across a myriad of different cultures, with a history of being marginalized, portrayed as barbaric and villainous, and having their people and culture wiped out. The other is based on the fictionalized image of folk hero Wild Bill Hickok, which took off in popularity and came to represent what the American public sees as “cowboys.”

So yeah, neither “stereotype” is representative. But there’s a big difference between stereotyping a group of people that have historically been oppressed and creating a stereotype from a fictional hero.

  • I<3Pawnee

I’d take this with a grain of salt. I mean, it’s Reddit.

    • James McEneely

      Hang about.

  • I<3Pawnee

Take this with two grains of salt. The Reddit linked is some sort of GamerGate hub.

    • James McEneely

      Hold Up.

    • azariosays

it’s amusing how you can hold an off screen picture in front of someone and they still don’t want to believe, However, I added “rumor” so that I can get official word from square on these images. Sucks it’s the weekend and i probably wont hear from them till Monday.

    • I<3Pawnee

You’re right. It’s quite funny that I prefer waiting to hear from the source or receive more proof than a picture from Reddit. I definitely think it should bear extra scrutiny, coming both from Reddit and from a group that has a bias.

Apparently deciding to wait to be upset, to hope that this isn’t the case (even if it’s a long, long shot), is amusing.

    • azariosays

You know, I can agree with that last part. I should wait for official word. I however, am not discrediting those gamers in that forum.

    • I<3Pawnee

I’m not saying they’re wrong, I’m saying they have a bias, and that makes me extra cautious.

    • I<3Pawnee

All I said was tread with caution.

    • James McEneely

No, you specifically indicated that because of their affiliations that they shouldn’t be trusted. If you want to say that we should wait for a more official source and to tread with caution, say that instead of “well, since it’s from reddit and GamerGaters we shouldn’t trust that source.”

    • I<3Pawnee

I didn’t intend for my words to come across that way, but I can certainly see your point. To me, taking things with a grain of salt means that you take it lightly. Unofficial channels and biased groups (on any side of anything) should be taken lightly, until we know more. But that’s just my opinion.

  • Mr0303

Meanwhile we have Julia Chang in Tekken, T. Hawk in Street Fighter and Nightwolf in Mortal Kombat. I suppose they changed it because they can’t portray native americans in a negative way – it is the soft bigotry of low expectations. The PC culture takes another victim.

  • Keichi Morisato

this is no rumor, this was confirmed a long time ago when they announced western localization.

    • azariosays

As a news outlet we have not gotten official word from Nintendo or square so we have to mark it as that. I know Keichi, I know 😉

    • Keichi Morisato

but this was confirmed MONTHS ago, i remember there being a huge shit storm over it.

  • David S

Christ, what the hell is wrong with Squenix and NOA? In 10 to 15 years, people will look back at this nonsense and laugh/cringe at them the way we look back at the prohibitionists. They are single handedly making the term ‘localization’ the worst black mark any game can have against it.

Anyone know if the JP version of Bravely Second has english subs like Bravley Default did? That’s how I got around this idiocy the first time

  • WishingTikal

is it just the american version or the europe version too?

    • Steve Baltimore

This was actually from the early European demo.

  • Craig A McLeod

Well at least they did the whole thing and not just the class, that’d be hella awkward.

  • Greg

  • Speed12345

This is beyond censorship, its pure discrimination.

  • kuroneko0509

so someone reupload my images and posted it in that subreddit huh….

    • azariosays

Hi are these your images? I will more than happily give you credit for them. I apologize.

    • kuroneko0509

Yes those 2 are my images but it’s ok. It’s not your fault. I’m just surprised it made to there haha

  • gamer-against-ignorants

cool to see all of these white people explaining how native americans feel, I’m sure they’re all experts, anthropologists even. they’d have to be otherwise they’re talking out of their ass

    • Ninty

Which comments are you referring to?
