Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth2 | Stella Dungeon

The last new feature I would like to talk about is the new “Stella’s Dungeon” mini-game. You basically send Stella and Fella into each dungeon you have unlocked to find additional plans, materials and other treasures. It will take her a set amount of real time to explore each floor, and you will be granted a special reward for clearing all the floors in a dungeon.

I was annoyed at this mini-game for several reasons. First and foremost, you equip Stella with a weapon, some armor, an orb with various effects and an accessory. There is really no way to know what will work best in each dungeon, and you basically have to guess at it. This shouldn’t be a big deal — since you only lose what items she has equipped if she fails — if it didn’t take so much time and you didn’t have to start the dungeon back at Level 1. Some dungeons will take only a couple hours for her to complete while others can take up to 10 hours. Now, the game does count the time you have your Vita in Sleep Mode with the game running towards this, but, still, it’s an excessive penalty. I think this may be the only time in my life I prayed before I turned on my Vita, “Please let her make it… PLEASE!” This was usually followed by me saying “YES!” loudly, or something I cannot put in this review that rhymes with “duck.” Though, you get some neat stuff for completing the levels — at least this completely optional.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth2 | Stella Dungeon Crawling

The shortcomings of the Stella Dungeon mini-game aside, this is a fantastic title. For its price tag of $39.99, you get a lot of bang for your buck. The story is great with tons of humor and great characters. The combat is just as fun as it has ever been with tons of baddies to dispose of and plenty of hidden bosses to fight. There is also a ton of additional costumes, weapons and perks to unlock and play around with. As if all that wasn’t enough, there are several different endings for you to unlock including a new Holy Sword ending. I’ve spent over 50 hours in this so far, and there is still tons of stuff for me to do. I would have no issue recommending this to anyone that is a fan of the series or a fan of RPGs in general.

Steve started with oprainfall not long after the campaign moved from the IGN forums to Facebook. Ever since, he has been fighting to give all non-mainstream RPGs a fair voice. As the site admin, he will continue to do this and even show there is value in what some would deem "pure ecchi." He loves niche games and anime more than anything... well, except maybe Neptune.
