New Trademarks for Pokken Fighters & Pokken Tournament in Europe | oprainfall
Could a Pokémon-based tournament fighter be headed to Wii U?

Two new trademarks have been filed in Europe by The Pokémon Company International: “Pokken Fighters” and “Pokken Tournament”. The Pokémon Company registered the same two trademarks in North America last year. This has lead some to speculate that a Pokémon fighting game is being developed for Wii U. While a fighting game is a possibility, the trademark in question covers a wide range of uses and possibilities.

Here are some of the things covered by the trademarks:

Computer game programs; computer game software; electronic game programs; electronic game software; interactive electronic game programs; interactive electronic game software; interactive video game programs; interactive video game software; video game programs; video game software; downloadable multimedia files, namely, games; downloadable computer game programs; downloadable computer game software; downloadable electronic game programs; downloadable electronic game software; downloadable interactive electronic game programs; downloadable interactive game software; downloadable video game programs; downloadable video game software; Near field communication (NFC) technology-enabled devices, namely, key chain tags, key chains, key fobs, key tags, key rings and key holders, and figurines, to facilitate the transmission and recording and exchange of video game content.

Board games; Electronic game equipment for playing video games in the nature of hand held units for playing electronic games; Game cards; Plush dolls; Manipulative puzzles; Toy action figures; Video game machines for use with external display screen or monitor; Arcade game machines; Trading card games.

The mention of NFC technology is especially interesting, since Nintendo has utilized the Wii U feature before in the downloadable title Pokémon Rumble U. Nintendo also has four confirmed Pokémon fighters in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS: Pikachu, Lucario, Charizard, and Greninja. With E3 just around the corner, it will be interesting to see if either Pokken Fighters or Pokken Tournament will make an appearance.
