While The Last Story and Pandora’s Tower are pretty readily available at the time I write this, there is one game in the Operation Rainfall Campaign that remains…quite elusive, to say the least. Most people reading this understand how rare Xenoblade Chronicles has become…how various sellers, including major retailers, have made…certain adjustments to meet demand.

xenobladechroniclesheroreiner

Many of the oprainfall Staff clearly hold Xenoblade Chronicles in high regard. I’ve even gone on record to say it’s one of the (if not the single) greatest game(s) I’ve ever played. I’m grateful to have been able to afford it at the time, much less speed to my local Gamestop when it was announced on December 2nd, 2011. But I know many others missed out, and they have yet to find the game offered for less than $100.

Xenoblade: On Gamestop's Best Seller List Again

Those vigilant enough may have noticed something a little odd on the main page at Gamestop.com. That’s right—Xenoblade is in their Best Sellers list. That’s because the game (pre-owned, not new) has been made readily available again (on and off), for the oh-so-low price of… $89.99 USD. Much of our readership may not be aware that the game is being offered there once again, so I’m just doing my part to make sure every single one of you gets a chance to experience this game.

Here’s a link below to see for yourself. I’m curious to know if any of you are debating making that purchase. Let me know in the comments below!

  • au

ahh dammit… should’ve picked it up when it was at a reasonable price point…

  • Roxas

Picked mine up for my B-Day, which was close to the day it came out. So worth it.

    • RagunaXL

same here. it was my b-day present. awesome it’s available again. for $90, that’s kind of rough. sad it will eventually be a $10 download on 5DS

    • Nivek

5DS? What are you playing at?

  • I don’t think I ever imagined it would get this expensive, this quickly. I mean I knew it could, but wow, that was fast! It might be worth it if you look at it this way, for me it took around 200 hours because I took my time, but for others who do some sidequests and somehow not get lost in the atmosphere let’s say it takes about…100 hours. That’s a little less than a dollar per hour and you’ll have a blast….Of course not everyone would be able to afford that which is unfortunate but understandable, but if you can, pick it up.

    • Pyrotek85

I think people forget that sometimes. Videogames are pretty cheap entertainment all things considered, and outside the US they often cost quite a bit more. Not that we shouldn’t bargain hunt or anything of course.

  • madmofo145

So glad I grabbed a couple copies at launch. None for resale, just bought myself one and some for family that I thought would appreciate it.

  • Awesome-o-clock

I’ve worked at GS for nearly three years and I’ve never seen a preowned game go for more than what the new price was, save for Soul Silver and Heart Gold, and that is just $45. For $89, I can’t believe it! Glad I bought it on day one… ):

    • Thedude3445

Metroid Prime Trilogy is this way too. I have found exactly one copy of that game used, for $60. I bought it on sight of course.

    • Alex Kraus

There have been other higher-than-MSRP used games at GS over the years. Disgaea 1, Shin Megami Tensei Nocture, and Marvel vs Capcom 2 were all incredibly rare/expensive for awhile and then got reprinted or rereleased.

    • Lord Ackercocke

      So do I.

  • Pyrotek85

I somehow got a mew copy late last summer or early fall from Gamestop, had no idea how rare it was at the time. Sounds like it might have been among the last of the new ones.

  • Roberto Ruiz Contreras

I actually already knew this, good thing i preordered just like you on the day that it was announced, just like my Persona 4 Golden Solid Gold Premium Edition.

Gamestop is currently paying from 40 to 47 dollars if someone is stupid enough to sell theirs.

  • dakota

I got it was new at standard new game price, like 60. I traded it in when I was done with it…. I had no idea this was a thing…..

  • I had to buy a copy on ebay for $150 a few months ago. Worth it. 🙂

  • doomrider7

Thank God I bought this while it was still $40 used at GameStop. If I had known it would’ve skyrocketed in price like this I would’ve bought more of them as an investment.

  • Kroisos

Here’s what I don’t get: if there are people who will pay 90 dollars, how many more people would pay 50? A second print run would make Nintendo so much money, not to mention build hype for X.

    • Xx_Kares_xX

      What is this ‘X’?

Edit: Nevermind I looked it up, too bad it’s on the Wii U, oh well, guess I won’t be getting it. (and before the flame wars start, it’s because I can’t afford one not because I’m bashing nintendo x.x)

    • idosc

X will not come until late 2014 at best. That’s quite a long time to save for a Wii U 😛

    • Xx_Kares_xX

I’d much rather save up for a PS4… the Wii U has this single exclusive that I really want while the PS4 has a number of games that I’ve been wanting for sometime… sadly the quantity of titles that hold my interest definitely steer me away from the Wii U.

  • Grant Chamberlain

GameStop sat on unsold new copies and converted the sku to used and sold it at a major markup. It is what it referred to as “nused”.

    • Tara

Eeyup. They did this with the reprints of SMT: Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, and Digital Devil Saga 2. They suddenly had a bunch of “used” copies in every store for $40, when anyone in the know was aware Atlus had issued a reprint that was supposed to sell for $20. Not quite the same as sitting on them for a year or whatever, but still the same ultimate effect.

  • Matt Taylor

$89.99, that sounds really expensive, no?

  • grego

i grabbed one at launch, then had my sister pick me up one for my birthday. So now i have one sealed and one mint but open. Also have the art book.

Cant wait for my collectors case to arrive 🙂
Recently i even imported the club Nintendo gold coins based on the big 3(Xenoblade, Pandoras tower & The last story). for 70 Euros.

  • James Best

$90?!!! For a used copy?!!! Dang, I’m glad I preordered it when it was only $50.

  • Talera Ristain

Wow, I’m glad I managed to find a copy when it was still half that.

  • Jason Honaker

I’m debating on whether to get this or not. I really want to buy it, but for $90 and they can’t even guarantee me that it has the case and the manual? Also, there’s absolutely no indication as to the condition of the used game–I’d rather just buy it off of ebay and get the case, manual, and game and also have a good idea what condition it will be in. Plus, on top of all that, you have to pay sales tax.

Thanks, OpRainfall, for posting this though. I’ve been trying to get this game at a reasonable price for a couple of months now.

    • grego

your best bet is to use the “game finder” option on gamestop’s website so if it ever pops up in your area you can go and check it out in person.

    • According to many, many people here (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=648963), the “Used” games they’re offering for $89.99 are so unbelievably ‘Like New’ that many suspect this was actually a reprint, or a stock set aside by Gamestop.

So if you’re worried about it not being in good condition, that may forgo some of your concerns. Still, I see what you’re saying. 🙂

    • loyal_ethics

It’s not a “used copy” GameStop knows the going rate for this game online. They are taking advantage of the situation of this being a exclusive to their store. When xenoblade first came out it wasn’t selling to hot and now it’s on fire. They got a new shipment in and took the plastic off labeled it a “used game” and selling it at a inflated price of $90 it’s called monopolizing and Gamestop, nintendo, and monolith are very happy about how this is selling at $90 a pop like it was $60 or lower.

    • Jason Honaker

FYI – if it’s truly a “used” copy, Nintendo and Monolith Soft don’t get squat–GameStop gets the whole $90.

    • Guy Rainey

If loyal_ethics is right, Nintendo and/or Monolith Soft is still getting some money, just not as much as a $90 would warrant, Nintendo would be getting the same cut as they would get on a $50 game.

    • Jason Honaker

Yeah, I was thinking about it later, if they’re new and they took the shrinkwrap off, and sold it used, they’d have to give Nint. and Mono. their cut for the new game and pocket the rest.

If they’re traded in copies, they pocket all of it.

    • Jason Honaker

Well, I ended up getting the game, but I bought it on ebay instead.
I still paid $90 for the copy, which is like brand new, and I also got the pre-order art book included 🙂

  • TrueWiiMaster

Just imagine the price in 5 years… This could be the next Earthbound. I’m so glad I saw this coming, and was able to pre-order (though Gamestop never gave me that pre-order artbook).

  • Ryan_oprainfall

    I’ll share this with you all, though they may not ultimately work;
Coupon codes that work at GameStop:
    saver- nets you free shipping
    aug15- 15 percent off
    cag16- 16 percent off

  • Ryan_oprainfall

Also before you drop $100, consider that you can rent it from gamefly.
You can’t keep it, but at least you can try it before you drop down $100 on a game you may not like.

  • thepony

I got mine in January of this year. It was still 50 dollars then. Glad I got it!

    • TheGamerGeek128

Same here, I was so excited that I didn’t even care it was in one of their crappy cases that didn’t even close right.

  • Shikenshu

    I love you Canada!
The game only cost 49.99$ CAD NEW!
    http://www.ebgames.ca/wii/games/xenoblade-chronicles/312135

    • Ryan_oprainfall

It looks like it is out of stock there as well.

  • Thedude3445

That’s insane. I’m so glad I pre-ordered the copy way back when, because this game is only going to go up in value. Nintendo REALLY needs to reprint this game.

  • Bam

Greatest game ever?! HYPERBOLE in its worst state, I’m afraid…C’mon, man.

    • It’s not meant to be hyperbolic. I go into plenty of detail in the various Podcast episodes I’ve said that in. It may not be the greatest game to you, but it most certainly is to me.

    • Ryan_oprainfall

It’s not an exaggeration if he honestly believes it. Besides, IMO it is one of the greatest games ever.

    • Guy Rainey

Well, if it helps, this was the first 100 hour game I ever completed. The story constantly took me in fascinating directions. Personally I feel that JRPGs should stay around 20-30 hours, as it not only doesn’t take up your life, but the story isn’t stretched to a mediocre middle act. I always felt like I was doing something compelling during those 100 hours.

  • Matthew Lee

Geez. It’s only about 20 or 30 dollars cheaper than the ridiculously expensive copies on Ebay and Amazon. Kinda sad. Regardless, this game looks sooooo much up my alley, and if 200 hours worth is available from this game, I might pick it up! After I make me 100 bucks that is. But dang it looks good. Also happy to know that more copies of the game came out to GameStop (apparently). Maybe this will somewhat lower the price?

To sum it up, I sooo want this game, but that ain’t gonna happen without some extra cash. So yeah. Here’s to this series doing better on copy production with “X” on Wii U! :3

    • Guy Rainey

The game will definitely come to digital, so even if physical copies rise to such extraordinary heights, even if you don’t like Nintendo’s digital solution, you will be able to get it that way at least.

    • Matthew Lee

No, actually I like the idea of digital copies. Usually I’d rather get my hands on a physical copy, but thinking of it this way, if you lose the physical yuo always have digital. So yeah, like it.

    • Jason Honaker

Is it confirmed coming to digital?

    • Guy Rainey

Practically confirmed, http://www.computerandvideogames.com/345441/nintendo-to-release-all-games-digitally-alongside-retail/ . Nintendo may not get online multiplayer, but they do see the power of digital distribution. Knowing what I do about Nintendo’s licensing empire in the NES/SNES days, (shameless self promotion in coming: http://operationrainfall.com/why-do-third-parties-hate-nintendo/), I’m fairly certain Nintendo would like to go back to those days. What better way than digital? A company wanting to release a game must come through Nintendo to get the game sold, and Nintendo can decide when the game is released, if at all. That’s why I think that they’ve got the big push for same day digital releases on the Wii U and 3DS. They can’t just say that all games will now be sold digitally without backlash from retailers, so, they’re doing what they can now to encourage digital sales (though, in my opinion, not enough).

    • Jason Honaker

I was mainly wanting to know specifically if Xenoblade Chronicles was confirmed to be coming to digital. If it is, I may just buy it digital later. I saw a bunch of hits on google when I searched for it, but they all seem to be rumors.

    • Ryan_oprainfall

No that isn’t confirmed and is unlikely, unless they do some kind of cross promotion with X.

      I would guess no.

    • Guy Rainey

Oh! I was talking about “X”, not Xenoblade. Nintendo would be smart to release Xenoblade via digital on Wii U (seeing how high used prices can go), but I don’t know if it is or not.

  • loyal_ethics

This game isn’t as rare as one may think. Gamestop knows how much this is going for online. They got a new shipment in and labeled it “used” and jacked up the prices. Gamestop is monopolizing this game it’s in high demand and high regards so that’s why they’re capitalizing off of it.

    • Pyrotek85

Are they still opening new games and removing the discs, and then putting those nasty stickers on the cases that won’t come off without leaving a mess?

    • loyal_ethics

No they are removing the plastic and saying that they are “used games” as for the sticker mine came right off with no problem lol I think that’s cause I got a fresh copy and they just had put it on there.

    • Pyrotek85

Ah, ok. That still pretty shifty, though I guess technically it is no longer ‘new’ then. Glad you didn’t have to deal with that glue residue at least.

    • smacd

Rare circumstances where marking a new game as used actually benefits Gamestop. With them, I insist on a factory sealed copy always (never take the copies off the shelf, always ask at the register). Any game lacking the factory seal is used as far as I’m concerned.

    • Pyrotek85

Yeah I try not to get too OCD over that stuff, but really if I’m paying new prices it should be in new condition.

  • vitalemrecords

A few months ago I drove 2 hours into Maine to get a used copy for $60 – just putting in my two cents.

  • loyal_ethics

Who all ordered a copy off GameStop recently ?

  • laurenhiya21

Man I am so glad now that I pre-ordered it, even if I originally was kicking myself for doing so. I had thought that it was only for pre-order, so I felt stupid when I got it and found out that I didn’t have to ><; I don't think it ever got much cheaper, but I just assumed it would go down in price eventually and not up haha

  • GhostPrototype4

So…just thought everyone should know. It appears that the copies being sold are reprints that have been opened with the sole intentions of being sold as used. This allows Gamestop to up the margin and bank a lot of cash. People have confirmed that the boxes are from Club Nintendo and not the first prints.I found this thread here:

    http://www.gamespot.com/wii-u/forum/confirmed-gamestop-selling-new-copies-of-xenoblade-as-used-66957179/

Also, I decided to bite the bullet and order it online as people on eBay are still gouging it for way over $100. I have some GS gift cards saved up, so why not? To my disappointment, they will not process my order. I keep getting the error below at checkout. This is really low of Gamestop. If I weren’t forced to get this game through them, I would never shop there again.

    • loyal_ethics

I know some of you are gone hate me for this or say negative things about what I’m about to say but if not and you understand cool. Ghost I saw that gamestop was doing their buy 2 get one free on wii games and I caught on to this idea prior to you getting that ^ display. I tried to order 3 copies and get a free copy and it wasnt processing my order so I called and they said they canceled it for no notable reason. She just told me I’d have to do it in store. That didn’t work so I went to go get 2 xenoblades from diff locations and found one at my main store and ended up getting my free copy of xenoblade. GS want to play games with gamers so before they cought on to this I made a move. And a day later this started coming up on the xenoblade order screen. This was a case of me working the system and not letting it work me.

  • loyal_ethics

And ghost all the xenoblade I got was clearly NEW not used but brand new Gamestop is just saying that their “used ” so they can charge $90 for the game and not MSRP. I’d rather them be up front and not lie about it. They came with the club nintendo codes so this is clearly a reprint non of the games are “used” they’re just without shrink wrapp but the discs look imacculent not a used product at all. Gamestop just trying to get over on gamers.

  • loyal_ethics

This game is outstanding monolith did great making this game. Whats not so great is Gamestop is passing off new products as used and not giving publishers a cut, or they’re printing their own copies and artificially create an imbalance between supply / demand. GameStop has the exclusive rights to sell this game and are creating a false sense of rarity in this game. The most this game should cost is its orginal MSRP of $49.99 they don’t care about their customers all they care about is price gouging them. If gamestop would sell this game at its normal MSRP the prices on ebay and amazon would go down and everybody would have access to this amazing game at a affordable consumer friendly price. This practice is one of the main reasons I won’t be shopping at another game stop and let all others i know of this shady business practice and company that is gamestop.

  • Ann

Anyone here heard the rumor that these games are actually new, but GameStop just took off the wrapping and labeled them as used?
If they kept the wrapping on, they would have to be priced at the original, but since they can price them what they want when they are “used” they took advantage of it.
I don’t really believe it but.. You never know.

  • Ann

Some of them may be preowned, but they really did take off the wrapping off of a majority of them and labeled them as used.
