Know of Akira through vague pop-culture references? Maybe you saw it so many times you stretched out the tape on your VHS copy? Either way, this is news for you!

FUNimation has announced that Akira will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a new DVD and Blu-ray release. This release will not only please purists, but fans of the dub as well. The film will feature the original Japanese audio, as well as both Pioneer and Streamline Pictures dubs. A trailer for the anniversary release can be viewed below.

This is how Akira was meant to be viewed, in HD to see all of its glory. I’m sure it will make your head e-x-p-l-o-d-e.

FUNimation has not confirmed a release date yet.

YES! Finally, now don’t have to buy that old out of print release that is expensive

  • Alan Van Dalsem

OMG. Best. News. Ever. omg those Pioneer voices ugh. They hurt my ears. Thank goodness the original Japanese audio is on this Blu Ray (with English Subtitles too i pray)

    • Did someone say

      WEEABOO

    • Ashitaka

A weeaboo is someone who likes Japanese things too much and tries to act like a Japanese person. This has nothing to do with weeabooism. It has everything to do with hating horrible, half-assed English voice acting performed by “actors” who aren’t talented enough to hold down roles as dead bodies on soap operas.

    • Alan Van Dalsem

LOL. some people are just really immature and lack tactfulness Ashitaka. When did not liking shitty dubbed voice acting equate to a person being a “weeaboo”? I DO like SOME dubbed Anime. Like Full Metal Alchemist, Xam’d, Blassreiter, Spice and Wolf, and Guin Saga have good english dubs. But certain anime films, just have bad Voice acting and voices that Do *not* fit the film at all or BADLY worded “translated” dialogue(ADR) that just sound cheezy and dumbed down IMO

What would REALLY be the best is a theatrical release…

    • John Mora

You mean like I got to see~

Is there any reason to get this if you already have the Bandai Visual USA release? I’m happy for the people that don’t already have it, though. The Japanese audio track is the most beautifully-mastered soundtrack you can get on Blu-Ray.

  • John Ellis

Now they have both dubs maybe the fans of the Streamline one will finally shut the fuck up.
