Shadowgate is Getting a Remake With Kickstarter Support

Remember sitting at your computer or TV, oh, 25 years or so ago? Sitting down and playing great games such as Shadowgate? Soon you will be able to re-live those days as Shadowgate is getting a remake!

Dave Marsh, the creator of Shadowgate, announced on the game’s Facebook page that he has recently regained rights to this and several other games from that era. What we are hearing now is that they will be remaking and releasing games like Shadowgate and Sherlock Holmes. Plans as of now are to release the games in sets of three.

The game, which originally came out for the Apple Macintosh and was then ported to other devices including the NES, is getting a second chance at life. Players that enjoyed this game back in the day will get a chance to see the game with a new and fresh coat of paint with new challenges, while those who missed out back then will finally get to see what all the fuss is about. For those not in the know (or who maybe were not alive back then) the game is a point and click adventure. Soon you will be able to play on your pc, mac or mobile device.

Shadowgate requires you to solve puzzles and rewards you with many different death options when you fail. The game begins at the castle’s gate and gives you a clear mission –   stop the warlock lord from darkening the world. Unfortunately for you, the path to the warlock is littered with traps around every corner and your grizzly death is almost expected.

Shadowgate will feature:

  • Over 60 rooms of first-person, fantasy adventuring

  • Many new puzzles from the original creators

  • Intuitive command-based UI

  • Beautifully painted, hi-resolution artwork

  • Compelling game play and storytelling

  • Windows, Mac, iOS and Android device support

  • Two soundtrack modes (Cinematic and original NES) and environmental soundscapes

  • Atmospheric and object-specific animations

  • In-game hint system

Looking for more information? I know some of us can become obsessive (in a very good way) and want to know more about a game’s past and lore. A book penned by F.X. Nine was released in 1991 which was part of the Worlds of Power series of video game novelizations of 3rd party NES games. Dave Marsh and Karl Roelofs contributed valuable information about Shadowgate.

Dave Marsh commented on Facebook saying “I will put out the original Shadowgate again as well as the other Macventures (Dejavu and Uninvited) on mobile devices. Since I have designs for Beyond Shadowgate, Shadowgate II and Shadowgate Rising, those will see the light of day too (probably The Awakening as well – a London werewolf game) “ Looks to be an exciting time for him and his team, and for fans of retro games and point and click adventures.

  • Whats with all the kickstarert crap lately? can’t anyone get their own investors without begging? Not only that but Shadowgate is a still frame, first person, point and click adventure game… a game like that could be made by anyone with a basic understanding of flash within a couple of weeks at the most. Seems like a giant scam to me.

    • Kickstarter is beneficial to developers because it allows them to seek financing through avenues that allow them more freedom.  When developer goes to a publisher and makes an agreement, the publisher gets the sweeter end of the deal the majority of the time.  Kickstarter also gives developers a chance to interact with the community.

      Granted, not every Kickstarter is a success story, and not every game comes out of one is guaranteed to be any good.  But it is a platform that’s allowing developers to make the games they want to make.  Double Fine has stated that without Kickstarter, their adventure game project wouldn’t be possible because publishers have become convinced that no one wants that sort of game anymore, so why bother producing one?

      As for this specific Kickstarter, yes, a chintzy version of Shadowgate could be whipped up fairly easily, but they’re not going for chintzy.  They’re going for a full blown remake for multiple platforms.  That sort of development isn’t done in just “a couple of weeks.”

    • I want adventure games! Sigh! Publishers, don’t I count? haha. Really though I like games like this. I will be keeping up with the details and hopefully be able to play the game quickly after it is released. Thanks for explaining a bit about the process it really helps for people to see just how much is involved to get a game made.

      What I like about Kickstarter—and crowdfunding in general—is that it allows us, the game connoisseurs, to be the patrons, not the visionless, foolish, shortsighted, tasteless, and obscenely narrow-minded businessmen and businesswomen looking for mere returns on investment.

    • I admit I was a bit skeptical about kickstarter at first as well. Once you look into things a bit more though you realize how deep things go. Justin explains it very well in his comment below so i wont bore anyone with my version of the same thing he already said lol I like that we get more games made available to us this way 🙂
