999 New PackagingPerhaps you read our review of the excellent DS visual novel/escape the room hybrid 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors but could never find it at your local game store. Not to fear, Aksys has you covered, announcing today that shipments of a newly branded “Zero Escape” version of 999 have been sent out. Likely in a move to bring in some new fans before the sequel Virtue’s Last Reward hits, this new reprint bears no changes outside of the new cover, making the connection to the new game more obvious by putting them both under the Zero Escape label.

While the story in Virtue’s Last Reward is self contained, it has been promised that there will be plenty of references to 999–as well as appearances by a character or two from the first game. So while it is not necessary to have played 999, doing so will ensure that you don’t miss any of the connections between the two games.

If you missed out on this amazing game, don’t let this second chance pass you by! There is plenty of time to see what you’ve missed in 999 before Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward releases on October 23rd for the 3DS and Playstation Vita. Be sure to preorder soon if you want the special watch; the first run has already sold out.

Is the reprint available in stores?

    • Tyler Wise

Game Stop will have it for sure–if not now, eventually, once they get their shipments in. But beyond that it all depends on what stores around you stock niche games. I’ve seen games like 999 at Best Buy and Toys R Us before.

  • Why was that not the original cover? That’s freaking sweet.

    • Tyler Wise

It is pretty cool, but I’m partial to the original, mostly because it is more colorful. :3

  • This is an awesome game, and I highly encourage anybody who hasn’t played it to give it a try (if you’re into this type of game, anyway).  Already got my copy of the sequel pre-ordered and counting down the days until it gets here…

    • Agreed. This game needs to get into the hands of more people.

  • As I said in the review of 999: I highly recommend people who want a wonderful story that grips you and never lets you go to buy the game. Its been a long long time since a games story was so damn beautiful it brought a single metaphorical tear to my eye.

    • Tyler Wise

      Only a metaphorical one? =P

    • If 999 did anything literally to my eyes it would be making them blood shot and tired because the game wouldn’t let me sleep.

  • I still need to get back to it, I only manged to get two ‘bad’ endings…

    • its nice they grey out the choices you already made. Makes getting all the others easier.

  • The hands kinda ruin the cover. Otherwise, I’d say I’m more partial to the original.
