AUTHOR’S NOTE: This is part of a series where Oprainfall will be briefly covering publishers that specialise in localising niche-market titles into the West. Fans of niche gaming should pay close attention to each of these publishers, and the best way to support them is by purchasing the titles they localise. As the saying goes, “put your money where your mouth is.” Without further ado, we present this month’s publisher:
Midas Interactive Entertainment is a company based in England that specialise in bringing all sorts of technology to Europe. In 2004 they created Ghostlight to focus on bringing Japanese games both to England and to the rest of Europe. They usually pick up and localise games that have been handled in America by companies such as Atlus, NISA and XSEED; companies that don’t have a European counterpart to take care of it.
Speaking as someone living in the PAL region of Australia, I have a lot to thank Ghostlight for. They have been taking good care of Atlus’ Shin Megami Tensei series, which has been covered extensively on our site. In fact, the first game to be localised by Ghostlight was Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer’s Call for the PS2, known as Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne in America. Other games in the Megami Tensei series to have been handled by Ghostlight are the Digital Devil Saga games and the PSP versions of Persona 2 and 3.
Other notable titles to be localised be Ghostlight are the Argarest: Generations of War games developed by Idea Factory. They’re also responsible for the European release of Nihom Falcom’s critically acclaimed The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky for the PSP.
Ghostlight also brought over Spectral Souls: Resurrection of the Etheral Empires some five years after its American release, and have given us Shadow Hearts: From the New World for the PS2. Fate/EXTRA is another excellent title introduced to Europe via the wonderful localisation team at Ghostlight. Currently, these talented people are working on bringing Europeans two outstanding JRPGs for Nintendo handhelds: Devil Survivor 2 and Devil Survivor Overclocked.
With a little luck, Ghostlight will hopefully pick up the next instalment in the Legend of Heroes series and continue their great work on the Shin Megami Tensei series, as well as other niche Japanese titles. Use the links below to and keep checking back to keep track of everything this fantastic publisher has to offer and will have to offer in the future!
Is there anyone else from a PAL region that has had experience with Ghostlight’s work? Tell us about it below!
