Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima has revealed his plans for Nintendo in 2016. He published his plans in the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper, which was then translated by a video games industry consultant named Dr. Serkan Toto. The plans contain some hints about several areas of Nintendo’s future, including the mysterious Nintendo NX gaming system.
Nintendo’s President says that it is “vital” for the company to experiment with new business models. He also said that the Nintendo’s first smart phone game will launch in March of this year. This is thought to be a reference to the previously announced game, Pokémon Go, but it could also be a different game that has not yet been announced. Nintendo also plans to branch out more with its characters beyond just smart phone games and theme parks, to TV-anime with its licensed characters.
With regards to Nintendo’s still mysterious upcoming gaming platform, the Nintendo NX, President Kimishima says the company is not trying to build on old ideas, but rather offer brand new ones. He still did not reveal any major details about the upcoming system, but said that Nintendo will reveal more concrete details sometime this year (quite possibly at E3). While he gave no word about whether the NX will launch this year, if it does it would likely be at the end of the year.
Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima would also like to increase the company’s profits. The number suggested was about 100 billion yen in the next few years. That’s about $855 million. Last May, Nintendo posted profits of $208 million, putting the company in the black for the first time in about four years. The Wii U has of course not done as well as Nintendo would like, but it is by no means a bad system. It has had a number of great games, and there are more on the way, including Twilight Princess HD, Starfox Zero, and Zelda U. Nintendo’s President will surely have more to tell us as 2016 goes on, but we’ll have to wait until that happens.
