Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode 4 was an incredibly underrated game. This game practically took everything that was great about Zeboyd’s previous games like Cthulhu Saves the World and Penny Arcade Adventures 3 and completely blew them out of the water. It had just about everything you could expect from an RPG; a story that is compelling, yet doesn’t take itself too seriously, some witty humor, a very uniquely structured and well-balanced battle system and one of the best soundtracks I have heard from any game.
The music in this game was simply amazing, and there are definitely other tracks from this game I would hope to cover at some point. For now, though, let’s just stick to this week’s VGM; Tycho’s theme:
I’m pretty sure it may not even be necessary to say how much ass this song kicks. That way it opens up and just explodes into sheer kickassery is something that flawlessly gives off the Big Damn Heroes feeling. It is also incredibly fitting, as well, considering the role Tycho plays in this game and his newly found badass status. It would take too long to go into the context of the storyline, but I will just say that you know shit is going to go down when he shows up and when this theme plays.
It is worth mentioning that Hyberduck has also created a version of the song that resembles a 16-bit SNES track, albeit not actually being one:
While I personally think this one may not be as good as the original track, I will say that it does a good job of capturing the feeling of what it would sound like on an SNES, albeit not in an exact way. It also kind of fits, seeing as how the game has a 16-bit aesthetic.
Really, I would definitely recommend this game. It is only $5.00 on Steam, so there is no excuse not to do so. Anyway, that concludes this week’s VGM of the week. See ya next time!
