Well, there wasn’t really anywhere for the Media Create charts to go but up from last week. On hardware, overall numbers were buoyed by the Vita as it rose just over 11,500 units from last week as it continues selling well above last year’s totals as we now enter the second half of the year. In addition, the Vita has gone above 3,000,000 units sold in the region, doing so one week quicker than I expected.
For software, we see Freedom Wars leading the way and helping out the Vita. The action RPG from Shift, Dimps, and Sony’s Japan Studio was the only 6-figured seller this week, launching with 188,888 units sold. This is the second biggest opening for a Vita game, behind the 266,326 God Eater 2 opened with last year. Freedom Wars will be coming West later this year.
Next up is Watch Dogs. The Ubisoft sandbox game netted two ports in the Top 20, with the PS4 port coming in second with 63,595 units sold. Watch Dogs has already released in the West with the Wii U version expected sometime later this year.
In third place, we have the latest game in the Kamen Rider franchise, Battride War II. This game also saw the Wii U port enter in 13th place. These games don’t normally come over, so you’ll probably need to import if you want to play it.
Next up is Taiko no Tatsujin: Don to Katsu no Jikū Daibōken (translated as Taiko Drum Master: Don and Katsu’s Great Space-time Adventure). This is the latest game in the Taiko no Tatsujin rhythm game series. The game features a story mode called Great Space-time Adventure Mode as well as the classic Drum-playing game. Gamers looking to play this will more than likely need to import this (along with a Japanese 3DS).
Next, we have Girls und Panzer: Senshadō, Kiwamemasu!, the first game based off the Girls und Panzer franchise. It is a third-person tank shooter and allows you to switch between tanks on the battlefield. It is unclear at this time if the game will be localized. It could be a while, similar to that of the Sword Art Online games.
Moving down the list, we get Compile Heart’s latest game, Date A Live: Arusu Install. This is the second game in the Date A Live franchise. If you’re a fan of the anime or light novels and are looking to purchase this game, you will more than likely need to import.
Next is Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate. The original Warriors Orochi 3 was released back in 2011 with a Hyper version launching with the Wii U a year later. Last year, the PS3 and Vita each received the Ultimate edition of the game, with the PS4 launching this past week. An Xbox One version is expected in September, which is when the Ultimate version will launch in the West.
Following that, we have a Bargain Edition of Grand Theft Auto V for the PS3. Not much to say about it. It’s just a new SKU for the game.
Finally, we have Robotics;Notes Elite from 5pb. This is a Vita port of the Robotics;Notes visual novel that released in June 2012 for Japan on PS3 and Xbox 360. Since this is a visual novel, importers will need to be prepared for a text heavy adventure.
For returning games, Yo-kai Watch again leads as it dips under 30,000 units again. Mario Kart 8 is right behind, but falls just short of the 500,000 mark. It is, however, helping to keep the Wii U above last year’s numbers at this time.
Finally, I would like to make a special mention of the PlayStation 3. After being on the market for almost 8 years, Sony’s third home console has broken the 10 million unit mark for sales in the Japanese region. It is the 6th home console and 11th console overall to break that mark.
