The SaGa series has had its ups and downs over the years, but the series is still notable for its more Western approach to RPG design. And most (though not all) of the games are here in English (though the first trilogy in the series is known as the Final Fantasy Legend trio). It’s gained a respectable fanbase over the years as well (including some on our staff). This fanbase will be pleased to hear that a new sequel could be beginning production.
According to Game Jouhou (as translated by Will Whitehurst), Akitoshi Kawazu of Square Enix was a guest at SaGa and Mana music composer Kenji Ito’s concert, stating that he’d like to make a new game within the next two years. Kawazu later reconfirmed these rumors on his Twitter. “Development is slowly progressing, but we haven’t yet arrived at a point where we can announce anything,” he said. There are also reports of him using keywords of past titles he’s worked on and mention of certain collaborators.
It could be that his is just a Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles project or anything else, but this vaguely coincides with the SaGa series 25th anniversary. We also know, from an interview with 4Gamer that Mr. Kawazu is very impressed with Monster Hunter 4 on the 3DS, saying that he felt like it brought out the true potential of the 3DS. Could this new project come to 3DS? If it were, it would be a good idea for Square Enix to release the Final Fantasy Legend trio on eShop. Just a suggestion.
