I so want to believe that those Wii U numbers in the Media Create charts are more than just a holiday bump. I want to believe that Nintendo’s home turf is finally taking to the new console. I want to believe that the gamers of Japan have seen the light of Super Mario 3D World and want to be a part of it. I want to believe that it can be a regular part of Nintendomination with the 3DS. Speaking of which…
The 3DS had another huge week with increases almost across the board. Nearly all Nintendo-published titles as well as most returning 3rd party games saw an increase (exceptions being Attack on Titan: The Last Wings of Mankind and Puzzle & Dragons Z, the latter of which released last week). And if you look at New Super Mario Bros. 2, you can tell that it was a good week game shops when a game raises its sales by 60% AND FALLS 4 PLACES. Granted, all of those places account for the four new releases this week but it’s still interesting.
And with one week left for this year’s Media Create charts, the 3DS is about 320,000 away from the 5 million mark for the year in Japan. It’s reachable, since they did have a few weeks last year when they topped 400,000. It will depend on a couple of things:
- How long will the holiday bump last?
- What kind of bump will The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds provide when it releases today?
Over on the Sony side of things, the Vita received a healthy bump this past week, finishing with 55,591 units sold. And in case you’re wondering, the Vita TV made up about 5,500 of that total. For games, the Vita saw two new releases make the Media Create Top 20: New Dynasty Warriors: Gundam — which also released on the PS3 — and Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Battle Pentagram, a game based on the anime of similar name.
Over on the PS3 side, while it didn’t get the same boost that the 3DS, Wii U, and Vita received, it did see a couple of new games release this past week. Along with New Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, the PS3 saw the release of Drakengard 3. The game is a prequel in the series and will connect with spin-off game Nier. Drakengard 3 will be coming West sometime in 2014.
Special thanks to Brodie Dayton-Mills for his work on the Wii U: I Want to Believe image.
