Yesterday, Nintendo World Report revealed that Shantae for the Game Boy Color is getting closer to coming to the 3DS Virtual Console. Matt Bozon, the head of development studio WayForward, said that they just handed the game over to the ESRB to get an appropriate rating and are waiting to hear back from them. Unfortunately, after that’s finished, it’s up to Nintendo to decide when the game is going to be released. Knowing Nintendo, it could be anywhere from months to years. Also, since WayForward still holds the rights to the Shantae franchise, the Capcom logos will be removed from this version of the game.

Bozon also stated that they were still thinking about the future of Shantae. They’re still trying to figure out when and where the series will continue. Given their success with the Nintendo DSi and 3DS, I’d say a new Shantae game on the 3DS wouldn’t be much of a stretch.
