SteamWorld Dig 2

The wait for SteamWorld Dig 2 will be just a while longer, as developer Image & Form announced that their upcoming sequel will now launch by later summer or early fall 2017, a bump of a few months from its original release. While the game is “pretty much done”, the studio cites the need for extra polish. The news that they’ll be bringing SteamWorld Dig 2 to the PS4 and PC in addition to its main platform Switch, may also hint at reasons for the delay.

When we plan the release for any SteamWorld game, we always want to finish as soon as possible so everyone can play and and have fun with it. But at the same time we want to create something new. It’s hard to estimate how long that’s going to take and at what point whatever we consider to be new is done. More often than not problems take a lot longer to tackle than anticipated. These extra months will take pressure off our team and give us enough time to give you the game you deserve.

The original SteamWorld Dig launched in 2013 for the 3DS, and eventually made its way to other platforms, including the Wii U. The sequel, however, will be foregoing the Switch’s last-gen predecessor altogether. Image & Form say this is no accident, as they will no longer make any Wii U games.

Even though we love Wii U and had great success on the console, there’s no denying that Nintendo Switch has firmly taken its place by now. For that simple reason, we will no longer make new Wii U games.

As for a portable version of SteamWorld Dig 2, nothing has been announced so far. The studio says they haven’t forgotten the 3DS or Vita, so the possibility of such a port in the future remains.

Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita are still important to us. We won’t talk more about portable versions today, but rest assured we have not forgotten where we came from.
