Sonic The Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog celebrates his 25th anniversary today, and Sega has released a video highlighting the Blue Blur’s most significant console games. It all started with the original Sonic the Hedgehog on June 23, 1991 and is followed up with impressive entries in the series including Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic Adventure and Sonic Generations. The video even takes a jab at Sonic ‘06 with a blurb that simply says “loading.” The video even gives a small nod to the future Sonic game that is currently in development.

Sonic may not have the best track record, but its hard to think of many game characters not made Nintendo that have remained relevant for so long. Iconic game characters such as Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot and Mega Man have become all but dormant in their respective series outside of toys to life appearances and re-releases of older games. Sonic, however, has been pretty consistent in software releases, and while some definitely have their flaws, others can be pretty enjoyable. The character also maintains a successful animated series in Sonic Boom and ongoing comic book series featuring a vast array of characters and story arcs across 200 issues and counting. The future of Sonic may be unclear for now, but it will be interesting to see where this fast blue hedgehog ends up next.
