During Sony’s E3 presentation, there was the unlikely announcement of Spider-Man bundled with a trailer. I immediately wondered why they would cram a movie tie-in game (that wasn’t Star Wars) into their show and then I wondered when the next movie with the web-head was coming out. And then it dawned on me that the title is being developed by Insomniac Games and is not going to be tied to any film. That’s where things got interesting…

The trailer is a nice mix of CG and action sequences. It’s easy to see a bit of the Arkham series in the fluid combat and the dynamic camera. This is a definitely a good sign. The web-slinging and swinging action makes this game unique, and it’s really hard to see what are automatic action sequences (possibly quick-time events) and what are the points where you have full control over Spidey. Either way, the game looks quite stunning and almost nice enough to pull off our hero’s bizarre choice for a suit. Either way, Spider-Man is not a movie tie-in, it’s being developed by a well-respected studio and it’s a PS4 exclusive. That’s definitely enough to make it stand out… that and the red spandex.
