Doraemon the Movie: Nobita and the Birth of Japan 2016 (Eiga Doraemon Shin Nobita no Nihon Tanjō) has sold around 3,559,400 tickets since its opening over two months ago. Sales are estimated to be about 4.037 billion yen (about US$37.7 million), easily defeating the previous film, Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Secret Gadget Museum (Doraemon: Nobita no Himitsu Dōgu Museum), which earned 3.98 billion yen (about US$37.2 million).

The film’s ticket sales are slowly catching up with the sales of the movie it is originally based off, Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan (Doraemon: Nobita no Nihon Tanjō), which still holds the series record at 4.2 million tickets sold. The director of the original 1989 film, Tsutomu Shibayama, also directed the remake.

The new film follows Nobita and his friends as they decide to run away from home for various reasons. Doraemon, the time travelling robot cat, helps them out in the best way possible by taking the kids back to Japan of 70,000 years ago.

Doreamon the Movie: Nobita and the Birth of Japan 2016 marks the 36th film in the series overall but the 11th film since the new voice acting cast took over in 2005.
