Star Citizen

At approximately 3:20 AM Pacific Time today (October 25, 2012), PC space combat and trading game Star Citizen achieved its lofty $2,000,000 (USD) goal after sixteen days of crowdfunding. Having reached this milestone, creator Chris Roberts’ private investors should now agree to finance the fledgling game.

Crowdfunding is not yet over, however, as Roberts and his team at Cloud Imperium Games Corporation have outlined four stretch goals, each $1,000,000 apart. Of particular interest to fans of story-driven games is that for each $1,000,000 beyond the initial goal, Cloud Imperium promises to develop the single-player storyline further, making it “rich” at $3,000,000, “richer” at $4,000,000, and “deep” at $5,000,000. Other additions include more ships and missions, an online ship marketplace, free mod tools, and “increased community updates.” The final stretch goal, set at $6,000,000 and beyond, is cryptically described as “LOCKED.”

Cloud Imperium recently introduced several new reward tiers, including digital-only tiers, tiers with multiple copies of the game, and tiers that include all five ships from the initial tiers. In addition, the Star Citizen website has introduced “digital add-ons,” which currently allow backers to buy additional ships of any currently available model for a real-world price, as well as the Electro Skin Hull Enhancement, previously available only through Kickstarter. Significantly, ship information has been posted to help backers decide which tier—and therefore which ship—to buy.
