4. Super Mario 64

N64

One game to rule them all, one game to find them, one game to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. Or in other words: Super Mario 64 is a landmark game that introduced the gaming world to a whole new experience. It is a game that defined how well you can go from 2D to 3D. It is a game that, above anything else, has become legendary. Super Mario 64, launched with the N64, and astounded the world with its stunning visuals, delectable music and innovative gameplay that would inspire many developers to come. A true masterpiece of a game that is embolden and influential, some may question it stalling at No 4, but it really doesn’t take anything away from this classic.

3. Super Smash Bros

N64

Back in the late 90′s, when I first heard that a fighting game featuring iconic Nintendo characters was in development for the N64, I instantly thought of a setup similar to Tekken with Mario and Link in a full 3D environment, executing in-depth combos, counters and special moves. However, when I saw the first images and heard the first details of what was to be called Super Smash Bros, I was a little confused and disappointed. 4 players? Platform fighting? Only two buttons for attacking? Pikachu? My scepticism carried on up until I actually purchased the game, even then I wasn’t sure about this quirky looking fighter. Once I placed the game cartridge into the N64 any worry or concerns I had were soon dissolved. It’s kinda hard to explain to someone who has never played a Smash Bros. game why it works so well, but it just does. With its unique roster of characters, stages, and items, Super Smash Bros was just too damn replayable. A surprise hit, which no-one really expected and what has led onto become one of Nintendo’s biggest game series of all time. Truly worthy of its No 3 spot.

2. Paper Mario

N64

I have a confession to make. When Paper Mario was first released on the N64, I deliberately ignored it. The fact that Mario, a game character that was already family friendly, had been turned into what I thought was a children’s storybook adventure was one step too far for me. I believed I was too old for the game and it was beneath me… oh how wrong I was. Paper Mario is without doubt one of the most ingenious, hilarious, witty and delightful games I have ever experienced and that goes for the rest of the staff, too. If you were like me and bypassed this game; if you have any interest in quirky JRPG’s then I implore you to try it out. It’s available to download on Wii’s virtual console and is one N64 game that should’ve never been missed. A true gem.

About David Rawlings

David Rawlings, or ‘Rawky’ as we like to call him, joined the Operation Rainfall Campaign at the beginning. He’s British and found solace with us as he was able to understand our pain about Nintendo and their localizing faux pas. He’s a big fan of the letter ‘U’ and refuses to remove them from words, even though we constantly ask him to. He also believes it’s about time Princess Daisy got kidnapped.
