In a statement that will no doubt have Mario/Zelda fanboys the world over screaming and farting in anger, Miyamoto stated that he would really like to make a first-person shooter at some point, if he had the time to spare. First-person shooters, of course, have been the whipping boy of these people for many years.
But what’s this? It seems that Miyamoto doesn’t want to make a first-person shooter simply about shooting enemies in the face. Instead, he wants it to be about exploring and interaction with the environment. “Rather than necessarily the question of ‘What kind of weapon do I have?’ in a first person shooter or ‘What kind of effect does that have on an enemy?’, I think that the structure of a first-person shooter is something that’s very interesting. Having that 3D space that in theory you are in and being able to look around and explore that—particularly being able to do that in conjunction with another person—is very interesting.”
That idea kind of sounds like what was used in the Metroid Prime series. You know, the series of Metroid games that were first-person shooter games that also had a big emphasis on platforming and exploration, yet several fanboys hated it simply because it was an FPS?
