Miyamoto Wants Metroid, Star Fox on Wii U

In a recent conversation with IGN, legendary game creator Shigeru Miyamoto was asked what he would most like to see on Nintendo’s new console. He listed two franchises: Metroid and Star Fox.

In talking about Metroid, Miyamoto had this to say:

With Metroid it’s very easy to imagine some interesting implementation for Wii U. I think that having another screen with the gyro built in really gives you a lot of interesting opportunities for development, and we can bring a lot of our games to life in a completely unique way with that.

Although there were no details on why he wants to see Star Fox on Wii U, it is presumed that Miyamoto would like to see how the game would use the built-in gyro and second screen of the Game Pad.

This comes a while after a rumor about a Star Fox-Metroid crossover. Though that rumor was debunked rather quickly, it does leave a tinge of irony to this interview.

I think most of us would love to see a new Metroid and Starfox on WiiU. In fact, you could say a lot of people were hoping for an announcement of one of those franchises at E3, which sadly did not happen.

  Yeah. If I recall correctly, he wanted a Star Fox game on the Wii. But we never got any.

  He also said that if the Wii Star Fox failed to do something different, it would be the last in the franchise. Maybe it’s a good thing that they waited on it.

I was looking forward to seeing Metroid Prime at E3 this year. My hopes were rising during the Pre-E3 Nintendo Direct video when I saw a Metroid icon on the Wii U’s Home Menu. Of course, we saw nothing of it. Supposedly, Metroid Prime was supposed to be shown at E3, but Retro pulled it out at the last minute, which would explain Nintendo’s anti-climactic ending to their conference.

Once you have so many franchises that are in so much demand, what do you do? You can’t just outsource them since they are franchises that have been meticulously crafted in-house. The best thing you can do is what Nintendo’s already doing: Splitting their teams and collaborating with third parties to get the new iterations developed with as close to in-house standards as possible.
