Evangelion 2.22

Toonami has announced that they will be closing out the summer by airing Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance on August 31st. This shouldn’t come as a big surprise given that when they aired Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone back in March it was a huge success and brought in almost one million views.

Toonami teased that the film would air “along with a special little goodie that you’ll have to wait to find out about”. Obviously there’s a host of things this could be, but considering FUNimation recently acquired the rights to Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo, it’s not unreasonable to speculate that this “special goodie” will be an announcement regrading a release date of Evangelion 3.33.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Rebuild of Evangelion, it’s a retelling of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion which aired way back in 1995. It is planned to be a series of four anime films, the first three of which have been released in Japan. The first two have received a North American Blu-ray/DVD release. If you’re somehow unfamiliar with Neon Genesis Evangelion, it’s the ultra-popular mecha, post-apocalyptic, psychological thriller created by Hideaki Anno and Gainax. It started as a 26-episode anime and rapidly spawned several movies, manga spinoffs, and so much more.

So be sure to mark your calendars for August 31st, and check out the trailer for the DVD/Blu-ray release of Evangelion 2.22 below!
