In a recent interview, Venturebeat got the chance to speak with Takuya Matsumoto of Mistwalker with XSEED’s own, Jimmy Soga, acting as translator to speak more about The Last Story.
The hardships at Mistwalker at the prospect of their game not being localized, how XSEED went to great lengths to Nintendo to get acquire permission to localize the game, and even mentioning a certain group of fans who did a huge outcry to get Last Story along with two other fantastic games here.
“Honestly? Yeah, I didn’t think it would see the light of day in the U.S.” – Matsumoto on the bleak news of the game possibly never leaving Japan.
“Our president…had some connection with Nintendo, so he was sending them love letters, love calls, to see if we could bring it over. He knew Sakaguchi-san from other projects, and asked him ‘wouldn’t it be great to work together again?” – Soga explaining the lengths they did to acquire publishing rights.
“This would be the first time. I did work on Sonic Adventure when I was working at Sega. There was a lot of hype for it, but Sonic is such a well-known IP in America. As for a brand-new IP, or a brand-new title? I’d never seen anything this big.” – Matsumoto on that *certain group*
