“Throw in one part demon collecting, part (seemingly) suicidal teens constantly putting guns to their heads to summon these personas, and part engaging dating simulator that make the characters seem more real than your ordinary game, and you've got one amazing game.” - Richard Ross

Specific Game Ending Scenarios

Wes Saylor gives us some specific endings which as promised are all spoiler free:

“Metal Gear Solid 3, super EPIC ending and if you don’t agree, what game did you play? Borderlands and Gears of War 3 (hold the hate mail GOW fanboys I absolutely loved Gears, but after 3 games i felt a little let down) are the definition of weak enders. Last but not least, the OMG ending, which can range from a single still shot through the entire credits or something along the lines of, please god, let me have back the last 40 to 60 hours of my life, I promise I won’t do that again. Sorry, Ghost and Goblins flashback. Seriously though, just because a game has a weak ending does not mean it is necessarily a bad ending. What? You don’t totally agree? How about playing Super Smash Brothers Melee and having to watch a twenty minute CGI cutscene about why Mario is so badass, or Pikachu for that matter. Now some of you are going, hey but Smash Brothers is a fighter I don’t expect a lengthy ending. Touche, but when you play the latest Mortal Kombat you expect a decent ending with good story line and maybe some cut scene, right?”

oprainfall Member David Rawlings who agrees at least in part with what Wes said, says this:

“Depends on the game, but I always love an epic, cinematic ending.” My opinion here is that yes, I want something different depending on the type of game I am playing. I am  a lover of all types of games and it very much depends on the type of game I am playing as to what ending I want to see. For more casual games that I really don’t care about anything other then game play then I don’t need an epic ending. Something simple that says hey good job getting through this will be enough for me. Other types of games I do require something more massive. I want something that impacts me.”

Which brings me to our next topic.

How the Ending of a Game Impacts Us All Differently

My husband Steve Baltimore says:

“Game endings have a huge impact on how I feel about a game – take for instance Tales of Vesperia. I think it is the weakest Tales game we have here, because the game felt like it just stopped at the end with no real closure at all. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Somehow with that kind of an ending the game just felt incomplete, at least to me anyways.”

I have to say I agree with Steve here. I think one thing we all do agree on is that we want something out of our endings. We want an emotional response. Some of us want to be left with our own imaginations to fill in some details while others of us want everything wrapped up nice and neat.

oprainfall member Ceruleath Noreleth wants a little of both and says:

“I want something exciting, different, and unexpected. I want an ending that allows you the freedom to use your imagination, but also one that ties all the loose knots within the game. It has to strike that perfect balance for it to really resonate and call to me.” Again I couldn’t agree more. It does take a very fine balance of wrapping up certain gameplay elements while allowing my imagination to get carried away thinking of the far off endings of the characters. You will find this happening a lot with me, the need of a very fine line between me loving something or being driven crazy over it.”
