3D Space Harrier logoJapanese gaming site Gamer has reported (via a NeoGAF forum post) that Sega is planning to release a 3D version of their retro shooter series Space Harrier on the 3DS eShop. 3D Space Harrier, as the game is titled, will be based on the original arcade version from 1985. It will have stereoscopic 3D graphics, and will be adjusted to fit a widescreen display.

In addition, Sega is planning to give some of their other retro titles the “3D Classics” treatment, though no additional titles have been announced at this point.

Space Harrier, if you’re uninformed like me, is a third-person rail shooter in the same vein as Nintendo’s Star Fox series (Space Harrier predates Star Fox by about eight years). It was designed by Sega’s Yu Suzuki, who was behind some of Sega’s other arcade ventures including Hang-On, Out Run, and Afterburner. One of Space Harrier’s arcade versions was notable for its use of an apparatus that would move the player along with their joystick movements.

3D Space Harrier’s release date has yet to be announced.

Would you like to see 3D Space Harrier localized? Which other Sega games would you like to see get the 3D Classics treatment? Let us know in the comments.
